You are about to embark on an adventure of a lifetime…  Step back in time and learn new skills, meet new friends, and enjoy the camaraderie of like-minded people.  Escape the hectic pace of modern life and learn to enjoy the simple things, like outdoor activities, parties, and handcrafts.

What is the Society for Creative Anachronism?

The Society for Creative Anachronism (SCA) is an inclusive community pursuing research and re-creation of pre-seventeenth century skills, arts, combat and culture. The lives of participants are enriched as we gain knowledge of history through activities, demonstrations, and events.

What is the Outlands?

The Outlands is a regional branch of the SCA.  The Outlands includes Colorado, New Mexico, parts of Wyoming and Nebraska, as well as El Paso and Hudspeth counties in Texas.  There are over 20 local groups scattered about the Kingdom.

What kinds of activities are available?

Most (positive) things a medieval person would have done exist in the SCA, from swordplay to playwright. We bring together as many of the best aspects of the middle ages as we can, with a bit of creative flair. Our weekly gatherings might include dancing, donning armor, or weaving – each person brings their own interests to the community. On weekends, we get together in larger groups to camp, feast, hold court, and revel together.

More information about activities, and the SCA in general is available on the organization Newcomer’s Portal

How do I get started?

You are welcome to come check out a practice or activity night near you, or even join us for a larger event on a weekend. We wear medieval

Each group has a helpful contact person to help get you started. They are called the “Chatelaine.”

Does it cost anything to participate?

Participation at our weekly gatherings is generally free and no membership is required.  Loaner gear is even available for newcomers to try out before they invest in equipment for our martial activities, like fencing and armored combat.

Weekend events typically have fees associated with them to cover class materials or site expenses.

Membership in the SCA starts at $30 per year and provides event discounts. It also allows you to participate in martial activities at events around the world and makes you eligible to receive awards.

I’m under 18, can I play?

Yes, there are many activities for minors.  Some activities will require parental permission or authorizing paperwork before a minor can participate.
