Deputy Kingdom Seneschal

Greetings unto the Populace of the Outlands and the Barony of Caerthe,

We write to you today to announce our choice for the Baron and Baroness of Caerthe.

It was a very difficult decision with all 3 of the possible couples being a viable and healthy option to lead Our premier Barony. We thank everyone who ran and put themselves in front of the spotlight. This is not an easy thing, however there can be only one.

We believe a Baron and Baroness should have a plan for where they hope to take the Barony in the coming years. They should have a passion and charisma for the SCA and for the people of the Barony in with they hope to lead. They should be approachable, welcoming, and willing to ask the advice of others. They should strive to serve and not be served. We work with our officers as a Crown or as a Coronet in a team to better the Outlands, the Society, and the Dream. We hold our respect for nobility and royalty high. As the officers do much of the day to day responsibilities the nobility does much of the recruitment, stability, and problem solving.

With a very close baronial polling it is our choice to name Lord Domenico Forestani and Lady Maria Castelana the heirs to the Coronet of Caerthe. We know that their joy of the SCA, new perspective, and love of the Outlands will help them along their path. We ask all of the people of Caerthe to embrace your incoming Baron and Baroness and support them in any way you can. We are stronger when we work together.

We hold high the continued ideals of the society and to furthering the joy the dream can bring to so many. We look forward to Our Kingdom A&S and the transition of the Barony of Caerthe.

Your King and Queen,
Jaxarticus and Anna, Rex and Regina Outlandium

Greetings, good Gentles! Our gracious Queen wishes it known throughout the land that in Their Majesties’ good Barony of Fontaine Dans Sable a War Practice and a feast took place this Saturday past, on the 20th day of January, AS 52, being 2108 in the common reckoning of years. During this day Their Majesties saw fit to hold Court, and important business of the Kingdom of the Outlands was thus conducted. The following is a report of that business. The Queen, in Her Grace and Poise and Beauty, was and is quite perfect. Any mistakes in the following words are the sole fault of the Herald, and none of Hers.

It was a pleasant day. Cool, perhaps even cold at times, but quite perfect for fighting. I did not think to count the combatants, but I suspect there was somewhere between twenty and thirty fighters on the heavy field. We were there to train for War, as commanded by our King, yes. And perhaps there to increase our individual prowess in the Knightly contest of Arms, that as well. But mostly we just had a wonderful time jumping about and bashing each other with sticks. After the melees, many of the unbelted fighters called out to the Knights, entreating them to meet them upon the field in single combat that they may test themselves against the Chivalry. Many of the Chivalry answered this call. All in all, it was a lovely morning.

At some point in the day the Fencers held a tournament to determine the next Captain of the Silver Tynes. Lord Septimus Marius Belisarius stood victorious on the field, and through his own prowess claimed that singular honor for his own.

During the day there was a delicious donation lunch, games, and other entertainments in the feast hall, and the Barony held a silent auction with many lovely items available to be bid upon.

During the afternoon Their Majesties met in circle with the Right Noble Order of the Pelican, and afterwards spent some time with certain Kingdom officers event stewards to discuss the upcoming event of Battlemoor. In the late afternoon Their Majesties held Court and conducted that business which was needful to the Kingdom.

Their Majesties announced that the event of Battlemoor would be held at the original site, albeit at a different date. They invited all present to join them at one of the premier events of the Kingdom of the Outlands, held the 4th through the 8th of July.

Lady Sawyer of Fontaine asked for and was granted admittance into the Comite and was thus made an attendant of Their Majesties.

Lady Adriana Lopes de Rodas was recognized for her excellent skills in the realm of Arts and Sciences with admittance into the Order of the Argent Hart.

Mistress Elizabeth Anne Grene, for her excellence in the skill of archery, was awarded with a Golden Pheon.

Lady Melangell Dwn and Lord Joshua Dennesson, for their steadfast service to Crown, Barony, and Kingdom, were made Companions of the Stag’s Heart.

Lady Illaria Joye was made a Companion of the order of the Silver Stirrup, for her excellent knowledge and skills in the Equestrian Arts.

Don Septimus Marius Belisarius, for his Gallantry and skill upon the Rapier field, was made a White Scarf of the Outlands. And thus the Court of Their Majesties, as well as that of Their Excellencies of Fontaine was closed, and all were invited to attend the feast afterwards.

On a personal note…I have two memories of this event which I will take with me. Well, perhaps more than two, but only two that I’m going to talk about here. The first is of a certain young lady who received an award from Their Majesties. As she walked back to her seat, looking at the beautiful scroll in her hands she stopped and turned back to the Crown, and asked if the scribe that had created her scroll was in attendance. And on finding that Mistress Monika was in fact present, the Young Lady strode to her and bent down and gave her a very real, very sincere hug. It was not a thing of the mind. It was not a thing of words. It was a thing of the heart, and it was nice to see.

In the same vein, there was a young man at this event who received an award from Their Majesties. After receiving the award he returned to his seat in the front row and while most of the populace lost sight of him at this time, I could see him. I saw him, as Court continued, sitting there holding that scroll in his lap, looking at it. Looking at it in a kind of wondering and amazed disbelief. The words and business of the continuing Court rolled over him, and he paid them no mind. He was caught in the glow of the words on the scroll, the glow of the words that were spoken to him by the Crown of the Outlands. I strongly suspect that when this young man is old and gray, when his strength has gone from him, and his eyes dim, the glow of the moment, that event, that scroll will still be there.

Scrolls, you see, can be a kind of magic.

And so I would like to take just a moment and talk about Scribes. You don’t generally see scribes. Oh, in many cases they’re out there, sitting quietly somewhere in the crowd, but it’s not like they wear big “I’m a Scribe” signs or some kind of special Scribal hat (not sure what that would even look like). These are the people that make the fantastic works of art that people are given when they get awards. While it’s always nice to get an award, it’s easy to sometimes forget that that scroll is the painstaking work of someone who has spent years, perhaps decades, learning their art and then spending hours sitting at a table using all that accumulated knowledge and skill to create a work of art that is for you, and you alone.

You have to admit…one of the really cool things about the Kingdom of the Outlands are the scrolls, each one hand-made. This is not the case in all other Kingdoms.

Our Scribes are, I believe, extremely thoughtful when it comes to the poor, forgetful, sleep-deprived Court Herald reading the scroll. As a Court Herald, and someone that has been a Court Herald many times for many Crowns, I can tell you from personal experience how nice it is to get a scroll delivered at an event with all the pertinent scroll text on the back, ready to be read, with the proper dates and names already added. Trust me when I say that teeny-tiny Mongolian words written in a really cool yet completely mysterious and strangely written font are sometimes hard to decipher on the fly. Don’t even get me started on Welsh. You may also not believe it when I say that it is possible to completely forget the date when reading a scroll…or even, in the moment, draw a sudden and embarrassing blank on the names of the King and/or Queen sitting or standing two feet away from you. But I have that super-power. Sure. We’ll call it a super-power because “super-power” sounds better than “air-head”.

Anyway, I am thankful for the Scribes of the Outlands

Greeting unto the Glorious Outlands! Please pray attend the Court report for Dragonspine Candlemas.

Dragonsspine Candlemas was a wonderful time. Thank you to the Event Stewards, their staff, and the wonderful gentles who joined us for this great event.

Sir Rowland de Grey of Lincolnshire was a fantastic herald for the weekend. We began morning court with well wishes and great anticipation of the day. Countess Richenda de la Selva made an announcement about Kingdom A&S and was thanked by His Majesty for her largess gift of felted balls (great gifts for Our younger members). Many laughs were had by all and court was recessed to enjoy the day. Throughout the day we enjoyed good company and loved watching the Tournaments. We even had some doe and stag support that hung out across the road for most of the day.The evening was full of joy and much deserved praise. Master Hawk Rill Hunnybun showed exceptional honor, chivalry, and prowess during Crown Tournament therefore We made him Our Shield of Chivalry. Rose of Castle Rising was called before Us. She is a great youth of Our Kingdom who helps in many ways and We bestowed upon her a Promise of the Outlands. A fine autocrat and wonderful Officer who has helped his Barony grow we created Antoine Francesco as a companion of the Stag’s Heart. Sir Lothar vom Bergenwald was summoned from his duties in the Kitchen where he had spent most of the day. As Sir Lothar’s service to this Kingdom has been long, steadfast, and varied We found him worthy to join his peers of the Order of the Pelican. We asked for his answer right then and made him a Pelican on the spot. Court was handed over to Their Excellencies and we heard many good things about members of the Barony of Dragosspine. A most befuddled Silent Herald was called into Baronial court but before Their Excellencies could begin We jumped in and awarded Niall Keating his AoA as he is a great asset to Our society and Our Kingdom. When court was handed back to Us we told His Excellency Don Gianni de San Germano we had further words for him and asked he come before us. Many words did we speak of Don Gianni’s skill, grace, honor, courtesy, and more. The Order of Defense was called to join him as he was offered admittance into their Order. His wonderful wife most gracefully raced to his side as fast as any I have seen. We asked Don Gianni to take Council of his peers and sit vigil giving us his answer at a later date. Another fine young gentle was called, Buggius dei Medici, for his great zeal, prowess, and dedication to The Rapier field he was awarded the Brendan Swatko for youth martial achievement. We look forward to watching Buggius on the field for many years to come. The time had arrived for His Majesties inspiring war speech. With Lightning and Thunderhead in hand the spirit of Jaxarticus spread across the room. All were called forth to WAR and all were inspired to take up arms, bow, needle, or quill to represent and support the Outlands this coming Estrella. With the weapons of Our Kingdom still in hand His Majesty sternly called for the Kingdom Seneschal THL Zafirah al-`Aliyyah. His Majesties words spoke of Her Ladyships long service to this Kingdom and how even when confronted with difficulties she has stayed true to the ideals of the SCA. The order of the Pelican was asked to join her as We offered her admittance into their Order. We asked she sit vigil and give us her answer at a future date. Thus ended evening court.

Feast was fantastic. The cheese was incredible. Really I could have just ate cheese. But there was so much more! The Event Steward gave some closing announcements and we tanked them, their staff, and the cooks for a wonderful day and scrumptious feast.

WAR practice was a great success and well attended on both fields. We had a few pieces of unfinished business We were able to take care of that afternoon. Utrid was called forward and Awarded Arms, he is a great gentle to have in the SCA and our Kingdom. Lady Adelaisa Bernois was given a Stag for her continued service. We know Her Ladyship will continue to shine in Our lands. Ciaran MacMartin was called forward and tales were told of his prowess and dedication and he was created a Stag’s Blood of the Outlands. Such were the court happenings of the weekend.

We had such a wonderful time in Dragonsspine and We look forward to Estrella!!!

HRM Anna

Greetings, good Gentles! I bring you tidings of the business of the Crown of the Outlands, as conducted during the evening Court held in Their Majesties’ Barony of the Citadel of the Southern Pass on the 6th day of January, A.S. 52, being 2018 in the mundane reckoning of years.

The beginning of the Court saw the Knighting of THL Patroclus who, at the beginning of the ceremony, was drawn into Their Majesties’ Court in a full-sized Chariot. Sir Titus, Sir Decimus, and Sir Stavros all spoke to the Roman virtues evidenced by The Honorable Lord Patroclus. After other worthy reports were given and oaths were sworn, His Majesty saw fit to dub Sir Patroclus a Knight of the Society. It is fitting and proper that those Gentles who have discovered the Dream we share be recognized. Caledonus and Juliana of Citadel, as well as Sarah of Citadel, and Angelina Luludi Sabine, also of the Citadel of the Southern Pass, were recognized in this way, and received an Award of Arms from Their Majesties. For their excellent and continuing service to the Kingdom of the Outlands, Lady Rita Die Perle Von Der Wetterau and Lady Idunn Hallsdottir were admitted into the Order of the Stag’s Heart.Gungir of St. Golias had business in Their Majesties’ Court, and presented to the Crown a certain Royal Banner which had in the dim mists of antiquity been left upon the battle fields of Pensic War. He told the story of the many and varied adventures of the banner as it traveled about the Known World, until at last it had come to be in his possession. And so he presented the banner to Their Majesties so that it could once again take its proper place.Julien de la Fontaine received a most excellent scroll which commemorated his position as the Protector of the Queen’s Heart. Their Majesties also saw fit during Court to admit him into the Order of the White Scarf of the Outlands. As Their last order of business, Their Majesties saw fit to recognize the artistic endeavors and talents of His Excellency Tariq ibn Yusef ibn Askari al-Ghassani and Her Excellency Elieth de Salazar, Baron and Baroness of the Citadel of the Southern Pass, by admitting them into the Order of the Flower. On a personal note…. The day was filled with a very well-attended War Practice, for both heavy and light fighters and it was a hoot! After the melees the martial activities continued as pleasantly large number of unbelted fighters challenged the Chivalry on the Field in single combat. I personally has a really nice time, and I know for a fact I wasn’t the only one.

The Stag Choir performed before the beginning of Court and they did an awesome job! Their hard work and talent are apparent, and I thoroughly enjoyed their performance.Their Excellencies of the Citadel of the Southern Pass are good and noble shepherds of their people, and are to be commended. It was a lovely event.

Thomas Winterbourne,
Blue Iris Herald to Her Majesty Anna, Queen of the Outlands.

Greeting Outlanders!

We hope this missive finds you well and in good spirits!  Sadly our carrier pigeon with the tales of Caer Galen Midwinter got a little lost.  The scared little pigeon was finally found and we now bring you the events of that great day.

The morning was beautiful and the temperatures moderate.  HE Randall Carrick was gracious to help us by Heralding our opening court.

Members of the Praetorian Regina (Queen’s Guard) Maestra Tatiana Bonnioulx,  Lord Svein Hammar,  Lady Viola de Luca, and Lord Servi di Villano were in attendance and came forward to be invested.Likewise the Comite (Attendants)  Mirza Jibra'il and Hrafna Ylvawere were called to receive their favors and be invested.

The Children present were called forward and were offered an item out of the treasure chest however Our treasure chest was in need of replacement.  Lord Svein Hammar generously gifted a handmade treasure chest full of coins of chocolate for Us to share across the land.

Our court was recessed and a day full of good council was had.

That evening Sir Rowland de Grey of Lincolnshire was kind to be Our Herald.  We Invested Baroness Morgan Cheyney as a Comite (Attendant) as her worthy steed had been not so worthy that morning.

Seraphina Pania was called before the court and the many things she does for her Barony and Kingdom made known to the Populace.  She was Awarded Arms and charged to continue her good works and joy in the SCA.

As the newly elected Harp of Caer Galen Rowena Colebrook needed little introduction as her service was already apparent to the crowd assembled.  She was awarded a Stag's Heart for all of her great works.

The Centurio Sagitarii Regius (Archery Guard) was called up to be invested. The Captain of the Archery Guard and Outlands Royal Archer, THLord Konrad Von Alpirsbach as well as Sir Ramon the Chronologer (Kronos), THLord Angus Montgomery the Forrester, and THLady Lêofsige Õ Caoimh (Lyssa) were present to be given their hoods.

It was announced that THLord Gauvain Eisenbein Is the new Rapier General of the Outlands and his Southern Commander will be Lord Septimus Marius Belisarius.

Their Excellencies of Caer Galen do much for the Kingdom and The Society.  His service we have seen across the known world and her arts and support of the Arts and Sciences is immeasurable.  Both of these good gentles go above and beyond what is expected of them and we sought to reward those works.   HE Finn Ua Briain was awarded a Stag's Heart and HE Cinara Ybarra received an Argent Hart.

On Sunday we caught up with THLord Kaios Alexandrou. His protection on the field of Her Royal Highness at Great Western War was beyond impressive.  His passion for fighting and presence on the field was proof he is a Stag's Blood of the Outlands.  Sir Rowland was Our herald for this as well.

Thank you Outlanders! You inspire Us,

HRM Anna

Greetings, Good Gentles!

Heed the words of Her Majesty’s herald. The following constitutes my best recollection of the high points of al-Barran Midwinter and War Practice. I apologize for misspelled names (I’m sure there will be some) and please know that anything that is left out or incorrect is solely the fault of the herald, and none of Her Majesty of the Outlands.

The site of the Midwinter Event was the Menaul School, in al-Barran. It was a pleasant site, and activities took place in three separate buildings. The day was clear, albeit cold, and there was ample room and places for people to take their comfort and enjoy the activities of the day, whether it be music in the feast hall, or the silent auction, or classes, or the merchants present. Their Majesties met with the various orders of Peerage or other worthy groups they saw fit to consult, and both a hearty lunch and a delicious feast were served over the course of the event.

All members of the Kingdom, who wished to swear Fealty and had not yet done so, were given the opportunity during the Royal Court on Saturday.

Of note, during the day and the early evening Lady Rhiannon (MKA Rachel Rodgers) set up a photographic booth and took professional quality photos of people for 10 dollars a shot, half of which was donated to the Kingdom Travel Fund. All in all, I believe over 300 dollars was raised during the course of the day.

Also of note, it was announced that the White Stag Herald will be stepping down. All members of the populace who are interested in this position should send a letter to Their Majesties, the Kingdom Seneschal, and the current White Stag Herald.

Their Majesties held Court in the morning and evening of Saturday, and on the morning of Sunday in which they conducted business for the benefit of the Outlands. It should be noted that Cinéad Mac Amhlaoibh, Mistress Lydia of the Pines, Lady Alexandria Vitalis, Lady Violet Bertran, and Lord Ragnar Starki all offered their service and were accepted into the Royal Retinue of Their Majesties.

On Sunday morning Their Majesties saw fit to recognize Thorgrim of Drygestan with an Award of Arms.

Mistress Brigitta Olavsdatter and Sir Gottfried von Zollern were both offered admittance into the Legion of Gallantry, on Saturday night and Sunday morning respectively.

Their Majesties saw fit to recognize great prowess, and THL Gere Thorkelsson, Warlord of the Outlands, was made a Thegn of the Iron Hart in Saturday evening’s Court.

HG Berengaria de Chinon presented her Majesty with a Tabard from ancient days, to be worn on the fields of Estrella. Before Her Grace left Her Majesty’s presence the Crown saw fit to admit her into the Order of the Stag’s Heart for her excellent service.

Mistress Monika von Zell has been serving her Kingdom for a long time, and Saturday evening Their Majesties recognized this by making Mistress Monika von Zell a Stag of the Outlands. Her Majesty made note that Mistress Monika never received this most assuredly deserved recognition for the simple fact that she was made a Pelican before the Order of the Stag of the Outlands had been created.

On Saturday evening Mistress Catriona nic Aoidh was offered admittance into the Order of the Laurel, and she will give Their Majesties her answer at a later time.

On Sunday morning THL Adrien de Calais was offered admittance into the Order of Chivalry, and she will give Their Majesties her answer at a later time.

Their Majesties, in Their Wisdom, admitted Sir Dennis the Wright into the Right Noble Order of the Pelican at the end of Court Saturday evening. Sir Dennis was not aware that this would be taking place.

On a personal note…. I have a terrible memory, and much of an event tends to blur in my mind afterwards. Sometime, though, I take some things with me, like snapshots that I know I will keep in my heart. I have some from this event. I remember a beautiful Lady (Her Excellency Danielle de la Rochelle) bending into her harp. I remember the grace of her hands as they moved along the strings, and the pure sound of it. I remember the pure sound of her voice and the beauty of the song he sang. It was a lovely moment, and it makes me smile even now as I type these words.

In my mind there is a picture of the Baron of al-Barran. No, nothing so crass and modern as a picture. In my mind there is a painting of a man. He faces away from me, towards a crowd of people. His back is straight, and his feet are spread apart. Over his head he raises a blade of shining steel, and in a ringing voice he answers his King’s call to War.

And lastly, I remember the sight of a strong and worthy man weeping as he knelt before his King and Queen, overcome with true emotion as he was, once again and rightfully, recognized as a Peer of the Outlands.

It was a lovely event.

Greetings, good Gentles!

Last week, in the Barony of al-Barran two events were held. On Saturday, November 18th, Baronial A&S took place at Sandia Preparatory School, located in al-Barran Proper. The following day the annual Toys for Tots tournament was held in the park by the Boys and Girls Club of Albuquerque.

Although His Majesty Jaxaricus was travelling in foreign lands, and could not attend the events of the weekend, Her Majesty of the Outlands was able and pleased to attend.

During the course of the Arts and Siences event, Her Majesty was pleased to give an award of Arms to Lord Keleman and Lady Hette, of al-Barran. The next day, at Toys for Tots, Lord Albinus and Lord Rados also recieved and Award of Arms from Her Majesty. Also, Lady Lucrezia de Carducci was awarded the Silver Tyne of the Outlands for her excellence on the Rapier field.

Both events were well-attended and most enjoyable. I personally enjoyed playing chess and singing in the two classes I attended during al-barran A&S, and I thoroughly enjoyed looking at some of the artistic endeavors of the populace of al-Barran. One Gentle set up drums outside and played them most of the day, which I thought was very nice.

The weather the next day was close to perfect. The middle of November is always a bit of a dice roll in al-Barran, and it was a good one this year. Cool and crisp without being cold, with sunlight and calm winds. The Toys for Tots Heavy Tournament was most enjoyable to watch, with Count Hrorek being victorius in the final round against Sir Decimus. There was a Rapier Tournament as well, which was won by Lord Julien de la Fontaine, the Protector of the Queen's Heart!

Special thanks to Sir Rowland, who kindly agreed to read scroll text during Court. It seems I set my reading glasses down on the ground while I was fighting and could not locate them afterwards. In retrospect...it would have been surprising if I HAD found them. (Note to self....do not leave glasses on the ground....2nd note to self...have extra reading glasses in the Herald's bag...)

In Service,

Thomas Winterbourne, Blue Iris

Greetings, most noble Gentles of the Outlands!

I beg your indulgence for a moment, and I ask that you heed my words. In truth, these are the Words and Will of your Queen, but any mistake in writing or meaning is mine alone, and I humbly apologize for any mistakes I make in conventions or spelling in this missive. (I’m sure there will be some…there always are.) I would give you good reports of the Outlands Coronation, held the weekend of November 11th, 2017, at which time His Majesty Count Sir Darius of Jaxartes ascended to the Stag Throne. By Right of Arms, and Grace, and Favor he then crowned his Lady, Mistress Anna MacTaggart, as the Queen of these lands. Let no man question the sovereignty of the Stag and Doe of the Outlands. Let no man put aside the rightful duty which is owed the Crown.

Their Majesties called into Their Court certain Gentles of good report to act as Their retinue. Following is a listing of those Gentles.

Sir Thomas Winterbourne was invested by her Majesty to be her Blue Iris Herald.

Count Sir Hrorek Wolfson was named as the Champion of the King.

Duke Sir Cyrred of Ashwood was named as the Champion of Her Majesty, the Queen.

The Warlord of this great land, won by right of arms, was named as Lord Gere Thorkelson.

Mistress Elizabeth Green was named as the Reginae Crimen Comite, or Head Attendant of Their Majesties, was given charge of those Comite, those Noble Gentles who have asked to serve as attendants to the Crown. These included Baroness Diana of Llanberris, Lady Olivia Solis de Lujan, Lord Hardwin Godricksson, and Lady Elianora Cuncliffe.

His Majesty called before Sir Michael McBain, Sir Athanaric Redeye, and The Honorable Lord Thorgim af Kobmannehavn to serve on the Praetorian Rex, the King’s Guard.

Her Majesty called Lady Bellatumara filia Disideri to be the Praefectus Pratorio Regina, the Captain of the Queen’s Guard, and Lady Bella was given authority over those who had sworn to be on the Queen’s Guard, namely THL Timur ibn Juanaid, Lady Fedelm Arilith, and Lord Maximilian Kern.

Her Majesty also called forward certain archers of good report, namely Master Duncan Alastair MacRae, THL Daniel Lark del Glen, and Sir Rand the Tracker to be members of the Centurio Sagitarii Regius, or the Archery Guard.

Certain Gentles, by dint of prowess or Courtly behavior (or perhaps a little of both) we recognized by their Majesties. Don Antoine was created as the Rapier of Chivalry. Sir Michael McBain, by right of arms, was made the Bearer of the Favor of the Queen. Lord Julian de la Fontaine, by right of arms, was made the Protector of the Queen’s Heart. Lord Galen MacIntyre was named as the Flower of Chivalry.

Their Majesties saw fit to recognize His Excellency Leif Davidson as a Count of the Society for Creative Anachronism, for his service upon the Stag Throne. The Same honor was given to Her Excellency Ansteys Darcy, who for her service upon the Throne of the Outlands was recognized as a Countess of the Society for Creative Anachronisms. Countess Ansteys was also created as a Lady of the Rose of the Outlands.

Over the Course of the weekend, Their Majesties conducted other business for the good of Their Kingdom. They met with representatives from our neighbors to the west, the great Kingdom of Atenveldt, who brought gifts and salutations from The Aten Crown. Master martin de Gras and Dame Fiona Sutherland were well-spoken and courteous, and represented well their Kingdom. It’s almost a shame His Majesty will be forced to crush Atenveldt at the Great Esrtella War that he AND A ROMPING, ROARING, SINGING, DRUMMING, ARMY OF OUTLANDERS will attend in February of 2018. Still, gentle Outlanders, the Crown has commanded that we are victorious in the coming War….and our duty is clear before us.

Lady A’isha, an emissary from the Kahn of the Great Dark Horde, had words for Their Majesties. She brought bread and salt from her Khan, to break with the King of the Outlands who, through bold words and actions, attained the word of the emissary that the Great Dark Horde would fight alongside the Outlands at Estrella War. Behold the diplomacy of the Crown of the Outlands.

Their Majesties were most pleased by a gift of the fruits of House Agir, comprised of many boxes of homemade beers, ales, meads, and other libations. No, really…it was quite impressive.

On Sunday morning, after the Chivalry sat in circle with Their Majesties, THL Patrick the Early was offered admittance into the Order of Chivalry. He will give his answer at Citadel’s 12th Night Celebration.

Results were read from the fundraiser conducted by the Ladies of the Rose on behalf of Countess Slaine. Over the course of the online auction, over 18,000 dollars was raised!! Praise to those who gave of their time and effort to provide for the auction. Praise for those who were generous with their purses in a good cause.

And lastly, Their Majesties amended the Law of the Outlands, as follows…

Kingdom Law Change -- Section VIII, 2, h.

  1. Monitor the office of the Scribe, who shall:
  2. Maintain a listing and monitor the activities of the College of Scribes;
  3. Ensure the accuracy of scroll format and text;
  4. Update the Scribe’s Handbook as needed;
  5. At the conclusion of each reign report the names of scribes who have created scrolls for the Kingdom during that reign;
  6. Publish once per reign a notification stating that all special or non-standard scroll texts must be approved by the Kingdom Scribe's Office;
Added:

  1. The Kingdom Scribe shall keep a list of all awards to assist the Crown with the completion of their award listing for their reign within the 60 day time limit to publish the listing. This will help to ensure awards are not given twice as the list is used to update the award listing on the Outlands Heralds website.
And these, to the best of my (spotty) recollection and (dubious) notes, are the high points of weekend of Coronation.

In Service,

Thomas Winterbourne, Blue Iris herald

Good News October 2017

Words from our local seneschals

Aarquelle – Seneschal: Generica McKenna

We've been a barony for 6 months. At the end of October, we had 72 paid members. That's up 13 in the past 6 months and up 11 over the past year. We grew more than any other group in the Outlands. We're the 7th largest barony (out of 8) and the 9th largest group (out of 22). We're doing well.

Three of 5 of the Queen's Prize winners were from Aarquelle.

The Weds A&S nights run from 5 to 35 people doing everything from dancing to lace making.

Fighter practices and Tourneys have between 10 and 40 people every Sunday.

We obtained a mailbox in the Student Activities office, and are working to make use of the funds allocated to us through the Spring Budget process,

Queen's Prize evening Court: Katherine le Fayre Atte Water was given the Queen's Grace. The overall winner of the event was Lady Elizabeth Argentieri for her glass work and also the Populace choice. Lord Borvanchi won the heraldic contest. Lady Fiona McPhearson and Lady Oona Farulfsdottir were also recognized and given gifts by HRM. Master Balthazar Knopf's Laurel backscroll was displayed and entrusted to a representative to courier to him.
Caer Galen Toys for Tots Event, October 16 A.S. 52

Good King Lief attended the Toys for Tots event co-hosted by his baronies of Caer Galen and Caerthe. These generous baronies gathered almost 200 toys! There were a number of archers, four horses and their riders, three rapier fighters and no heavy weapons fighters (proving that Stag’s Emprise was successful in exhausting them).

With a fantastic soundtrack from the neighboring fiesta, His Majesty bestowed the following awards:
Lady Elizabeth Argentieri – Argent Hart
Baron Stephan Sorensen – Doe and Mountain

Then His Majesty allowed this humble herald a moment in court, wherein I asked him permission to retire early. I have arranged to go on pilgrimage to the gravesite of Queen Bertrada of Laon (known as Bertha Proudfoot) at the Basilique de Saint Denis, and I must leave before the winter storms make the crossing too dangerous. In his benevolence, His Majesty allowed me to turn in my tabard and baton. (I will still arrange heralds and reports until the end of Their Majesties’ reign). It has been my great honor to hold the position as Her Majesty’s Herald.

Fondly written,

The Warlord of the Outlands Tournament at Stag’s Emprise, October 14 A.S. 52

The tournament was in the style of Sir Michael McBain’s Artus Cominus. There were eighteen fighters, thirteen rounds each with a different weapon style, single fight.

With mine own eyes I saw acts of chivalry. In one fight, one opponent had a dagger and the other had a great sword. The wielder of the great sword chose to only use one arm in order to make the fight a little more fair.

There were also amazing skills shown. We all watched as Lord Gere started to lose his balance and fall backward while retreating (the floor had gotten dusty and a little slippery), only to regain his feet and immediately strike out at his opponent, vanquishing him.

Lord Khal Gan was voted “best dressed” by some of the ladies of the gallery. His new Mongol kit is amazing.

At the end of the thirteen rounds, there were three warriors who each had eight wins. Sir Wilhelm Gelbart (known also as Galbrearth), Lord Gere Thorkelsson, and Lord Ronan f-Fiacal mac Conaill (who is also currently the Windhover Bard) all stood tall It was the King’s will that they fight round robin, best two-out-of-three with great axe.

Sir Galbrearth and Lord Gere fought. Sir Galbrearth won.
Sir Galbrearth and Lord Ronan fought. Lord Ronan won.
Lord Ronan and Lord Gere fought. Lord Gere won.

His Majesty, in consultation with Her Royal Highness, declared that the round should be fought again, round robin, best two of three.

Sir Galbrearth and Lord Gere fought. Sir Galbrearth won.
Sir Galbrearth and Lord Ronan fought. Lord Ronan won.
Lord Ronan and Lord Gere fought. Lord Gere won.

Our good King and wise Crown Princess then decided that a Meanest Mother (every one fights everyone all at once) was the best course. These stalwart fighters once again took the field. Sir Galbrearth was dispatched first, leaving Lord Gere and Lord Ronan standing. After a flurry of axe blows, Lord Ronan fell. Lord Gere was victorious!

In court, Master Bela Kierzon (the Kurgan) returned the Thunderhead to the King, saying he had long wanted to be the Warlord. By carrying this Axe he could honor the first Prince of the Outlands, who was his Master.  Master Bela was released as Warlord to much acclaim.

With pride and wonderment in his eyes, he knelt before the King in court to accept the Prince’s Axe, Thunderhead. His Majesty called for an oath from him. He swore to be a good Warlord, to try to be as inspiring as Sir Jaxx was when he held the Axe, and to wake everyone up at Estrella so the Outlands can be first to the battlefield.

Herein lies the court report for Here There Be Dragons

It was a veritably balmy day in the Shire of Plattefordham when Good Queen Ansteys’ court began. First off, the children on site came forward to present Her Majesty with a fan they had made for her earlier that day. Our Queen used that fan for the rest of court and at times at dinner.
-Her Majesty then gave tokens to all those for whom it was their first event or first even in the Outlands.
-Argyle the Strong was called forward and was given his Award of Arms.
-Lord Artair spoke of the victors in the rapier list, as well as a raffle.
-Lord Minamoto Ryuutaro spoke of the victors in the heavy list.
-Sir Mavrikii Andronikov was made a Companion of the Argent Hart.
-Lady Nonna, the event’s autocrat, presented tribute to Her Majesty from the Shire.
-Lady Nonna and a couple other ladies gave gifts of spiffy hats and cloaks to a few certain young gentlemen who have shown themselves as always being kind and helpful.
- Lord Stephan McCarty and Mistress Christina McCarty were both awarded Trefoils for their Service to Plattefordham.
- Lord Fjolverker was called forward and “Happy Birthday” was sung to him by everyone.
- Zeta Bruna was given an AoA for her continued helpfulness to the shire, especially in working the gate (one of Her Majesty’s particular joys).
- Lord Zvir, the Shire Seneschal, had several presentations, including thanking the young men who served water to the fighters earlier in the day.
- Lady Katarina of Plattefordham was made a Companion of the Trefoil for her service to the Shire.
- Sir Mavrikii and Sir Kaleriia presented Our Queen a pouch of memories from the Celebration of Artemisia’s 20th Year.
- Lord Thomas Marston made gifts of three small quivers to three children who shot archery that day.
- Thrain of Plattefordham was made a Promise of the Outlands.
Her Majesty invited one and all to Battlemoor and then Her court was closed. Everyone then had a lovely potluck feast and enjoyed the camaraderie of their fellow gentlefolk.

Kingdom Court Report July 15th-16th ASLI (2017), Highlands Rapier Camp and War Collegium, Barony of Aarquelle

Herein lies the court report for Highlands Rapier Camp and War Collegium.

The radiance of the Saturday morning sunshine was a welcome sight, and all fears that a much anticipated event would be ruined by the weather evaporated with the morning dew and the last few puddles of mud.

His Majesty bid welcome to the populace and shared with them his eager enthusiasm for all the day had to bring. Some announcements were made about schedule additions and updates for the day, as well as about some classes to look forward to at Battlemoor, which will be held on the same site. Baron and Baroness Aarquelle begged leave of His Majesty to open court, wherein they created the premiers of several new orders. With that inspiring business complete the populace was sent forth to learn, have fun, and generally enjoy the beautiful day.

The day was filled with classes for all interests and the mood of the populace gathering for court was one of contentment and well earned exhaustion.

Court resumed with some announcements of other wonderful events to come. Baron and Baroness Aarquelle then once again requested to resume their court, and created premiers for several more of their new orders. The Autocrats of the event requested the ear of the populace to thank them for coming and His Majesty, as well as the assembled Barons and Baronesses took the occasion to thank the autocrats and their staff with gifts of largesse and praise. Aarquelle’s Baronial court was recessed, and Kingdom court resumed. At that moment His Majesty called forth Fiona of Aarquelle, and with great words of her good works He did award her arms. The Barony of Unser Hafen then begged a moment from His Majesty and opened their court in which announcements were made and awards given. Kingdom court resumed again. The Honorable Lady Zafirah and her Countess Magge were called before His Majesty to respectively release and accept the office of Kingdom Exchequer. Next, his Majesty requested the presence of Lord Ciarán Brocc, and after recognizing his steadfast service and contributions as a Herald, awarded him a Stag’s Heart. There were a few more announcements and then Mistress Elena was called forth to give account of the Captain of the Silver Tyne tourney, who was found to be Brenden. Finally, His Majesty demanded the presence of Lord Gaius Furious Marius, and after words of his constancy, excellence, and prowess, created him as a Thane of the Iron Hart. Court was recessed, and the populace was encouraged to enjoy the hot water, dancing, songs, stars, and all planned and unplanned activities for the evening.

A brief court was held Sunday morning to once again thank everyone for coming and advise about the activities of the day. Brenden, newest Captain of the Silver Tyne was awarded his Silver Tyne for his excellence on the field, and with it, his Award of Arms. Court was closed with a resounding cry of Outlands pride.

Words from our local Seneschals

For the month of: June 2017

Aarquelle                                                                           Seneschal: Generica McKenna

Weekly, we have between 20 and 40 people at fighter practice; about 5-12 are armored, 3-6 are rapier and the rest are working on A&S, planning or just socializing. Count Robert’s monthly tournaments are part of the draw. Having a regular, nonthreatening, but still challenging goal seems to work. Our A&S nights are similar; a solid mix of projects, lessons, planning and socializing – drawing from and beyond Aarquelle. I believe actively encouraging this sort of diversity is helping us grow.

Upcoming events:

14-16 July ~ Highlands Rapier Camp and War Collegium (Buena Vista)

                  30 September ~ Aarquelle Defender

                  13 January 2018 ~ Viking Vinter Vonderlandt

al-Barran                                                                           Seneschal: Melodia Shaw

June is a quiet month for al-Barran. We have autocrats for Day of A&S (Lord Hardwin)and Toys 4 Tots (Lord Alexander) completing the year of events for the Barony. We are accepting bids and plans for Spring 2018 Crown Tournament. Planning is ongoing for Nock on Wood and Champions.

I am almost done with a revised event form and handbook for al-Barran, I am hoping this will help autocrats with their duties.

Upcoming events:

22 July ~ Nock on Wood

22-24 September ~ al-Barran Champions

16-17 December ~ al-Barran Midwinter and War Practice

10-11 March 2018 ~ Crown Tournament

Blackwater Keep                                                  Seneschal: Devon Nightshade

We continue to progress; we have monthly business meetings, twice monthly A&S meetings and weekly fighter practices. We are going to be participating in both the Roosevelt and Curry County Fairs, and doing a demo at the Peanut Valley Festival.

Our new Knight Marshal, Lord Corwin, is planning to build up the Shire loaner gear and continuing to offer instruction and help with armoring. We have three new people learning to fight.

Upcoming events:

21-22 October ~ Peanut Valley Festival DEMO

Blaiddwyn                                                                        Seneschal: Gerlin von Tiesenhausen

Summer Hiatus

Upcoming events:

August ~ Fall Welcome Back demo

Bryngalou                                                                                          Seneschal: Kveldulfr Valbrandsson

We have had new interest in our Shire, and new people have been coming to fighter practice and participating in meetings. We had a Shire tournament with a great turnout and a local member is starting a garb making business. We had one new name and device submission.

We are working on plans for Battlemoor, and finding an open date and site for Mountain Pas.

Upcoming events:

Caer Galen                                                                       Seneschal:

Upcoming events:

Caerthe                                                                                 Seneschal: Gauvain Eisenbein

Upcoming events:

15-17 September ~ Caerthen Champions

14 October ~ Stag’s Emprise

21 October ~ Stag’s Con

22 October ~ Queen’s Prize

5-6 May 2018 ~ Coronation

Citadel of the Southern Pass           Seneschal: Aoife Ruadh inghean Ragnaill

June was a very busy month for the Citadel as a whole, as preparations for the July fighting event (Hastilude) were heavily underway. Officer meetings are well attended and each of the major positions took responsibility for their corresponding areas in coordinating events at Hastilude. Fighter practices are well attended, and our Knight Marshal continues to focus on teaching newcomers the basics and skills related to long-term interest and growth in the martial aspect of the game. Archery remains incredibly well attended--- and the new Wednesday practice for Rapier is growing. Caelix Harmoniae continues to grow and expand the choral repertoire, to include instruments. One of our members has begun a scribal guild, headed by HL Edmund, and many members are enjoying learning illumination and the basics of calligraphy.

Herein lies the court report for Caer Galen Defender.

Saturday morning in the bright mountain morning, Their Royal Majesties saw fit to award THL Konrad von Alpirsbach with an Argent Hart for his various artistic endeavors. They also gave word-fame to Baroness Keridwen Andersdottir by making her a Companion of the Fallen Snow. Both lovely scrolls were made by THL Cecilia Caterina da Firenze.

After a monsoon deluge (causing much close-quarters merriment), afternoon court was had. The Windhover Bard, Lady Isabel la Biche d’Hiver was made a Companion of the Argent Hart (scroll by Lady Leticia Attewode). Lord Ketill Geirason (aka Kjeld) was given a Stag’s Heart for his service to Caer Galen and the Outlands (scroll by Mistress Katrin von Hohenzollern).

His Majesty declared that Letters of Intent for consideration for the upcoming Crown Tournament are due by 11:59pm on July 26th. Court was closed and a lovely evening of bardic and revelry commenced.

Faithfully recounted,

Herein lies the court report for Drystone/St. Martin’s Collegium.

Saturday morning was beautiful and peaceful in the mountains above Drygestan. Her Royal Majesty awarded Lady Michaela de Montgomery a Trefoil for her steadfast service to the Shire of Drygestan (scroll is a work in progress). She then allowed the Autocrat, THL Erchambaut and the Class Coordinator, Sir Rowland, some time to announce the days activities. Her Majesty then took a moment to tell us of her morning contemplation. As our Queen listened to the early morning birdsong and gazed upon the trees, she noticed the evidence left behind of those not of our ilk who had used these lands before, and it caused Her Majesty great sadness. She asked her people to make special effort to leave the site cleaner than we found it. I saw with mine own eyes Outlanders of all ages doing this thing the rest of the event.

Classes were held and much learning and sharing of knowledge and philosophy happened. Camaraderie and festivity happened in the afternoon, with a bardic then drumming and dancing.

The setting for Sunday morning’s court was as beautiful as Saturday’s. Mikhailo of al-Barran was made a Companion of the Golden Pheon to much acclaim (scroll by Lady Gianina), and Mistress Brigitta Olavsdotter of Kiel was made a Companion of the Stag and Chalice for her longstanding service to the Kingdom (scroll by Mistress Monika. The Shire of Drygestan presented Her Majesty with a goodly amount of cunningly wrought gifts to be used as largesse. THL Iohann made an announcement about the upcoming Stag’s Emprise event.

Please accept this humble herald’s apologies for waiting so long to send this missive. I shall endeavor to be more timely in the future.

Belatedly reported,
Matilda Seton

Aarquelle                                                                           Seneschal: Generica McKenna

We’re a BARONY now !!

The monthly tourneys are very well attended. This was a great idea, and it's doing a lot to help our fighters work as a unit, draw in visitors at the park and give people a reason to get excited once a month. We generally have 30+ people at fighter practices in the center of the barony.  We have members returning after a long absence and new members as well. There are newly authorized fighters.  We are working on ways of supporting the outer edges of the Barony, as well. We're working on ways to stream meetings and A&S.

Upcoming events:

al-Barran                                                                           Seneschal: Melodia Shaw

May was a big month for al-Barran as it was Grand Outlandish time. The event went well with over 400 people in attendance. The site for Outlandish has had many upgrades this year including: permanent Showers, a bridge on the melee field, a hydration station, and many new gates to campsites. With the Barony's volunteers for labor and the donations of materials much has been accomplished.  I would like to congratulate Lady Beletumara and Sir Fierien on a great event!

We have decided to continue doing the al-Thing at the Boys and Girls club. We will also be having 2 mini events to help pay for the site, and to keep the costs down, we have agreed to do an hour class a month for the Club

Upcoming events:

22 July ~ Knock on Wood

22-24 September ~ al-Barran Champions

16-17 December ~ al-Barran Midwinter and War Practice

Blackwater Keep                                                  Seneschal: Devon Nightshade

Things are going well in the Shire.  We gathered this month for a potluck/meeting and discussed many exciting ideas for activities and general merry making.

Mayday went very well! We had a good turnout with friends from elsewhere and some new faces interested in learning more about us.  Mountain Pas is definitely coming again this year, though we have not nailed down a date yet.  We have begun looking at events for next year, as well.

Upcoming events:

Caer Galen                                                                       Seneschal: Keridwen Andersdottir

Caer Galen is gearing up for a busy summer and fall season.

This will be my final communique as Baronial Seneschal.  As I look over the past 2.5 years, I can see that while I made mistakes, I also learned from them, and fixed things where I could. I have *amazing* volunteers who helped me and supported me. The Barony did not explode into a huge dumpster fire, and for that, I feel somewhat responsible. I will be stepping down at Defender, and Rowenna will take up the burden. I am certain she will do an *amazing* job.  Thank you for believing in me.

Citadel of the Southern Pass           Seneschal: Aoife Ruadh inghean Ragnaill

May in the Citadel can be summed up with two words: Event Preparation. Team Citadel was very busy with activity and preparation for our Mayday event (May 14th) and Grand Outlandish. Additionally, the barony spent time catching up on the planning for our upcoming Hastilude event. Attendance at Mayday also allowed a chance to celebrate the mothers in the barony, as Her Excellency Elieth hosted a Mother’s Day Tea. Throughout the Mayday event, 45 barony members (including 13 children) made an appearance or spent the day celebrating.  Their Excellencies and other members of the populace did attend the neighboring Shire of Nahrun's Quarterly Persona Feast.

Citadel remains solid in consistent attendance and active engagement by current members. The A&S nights, including Clothiers Guild, are well-attended— under the guidance of Their Excellencies Tariq and Elieth and THL Edmund, plans were approached to begin a Scribal Guild. On the martial side, the Sunday, Tuesday and Wednesday fighter practices are regularly attended and our fighters proved they are at the top of their game at the Grand Outlandish tournaments. The Brewers Guild is in the process of updating policies/charters to clarify some structural procedures and help the group grow. Unsurprisingly, the archery program is still boasting a rather large attendance, and the partnership with the City of El Paso Museum of Archeology is creating opportunities to meet many members of the public. We continue to get newcomers from this program and it will be up to the leaders of the various activities to maintain the interest of these contacts and help them translate to memberships and activity.

The Seneschal’s office is undertaking the creation of an event planning class, specifically geared to the distinctive flavor of activities of the El Paso area and participants (unique aspects and traditions of Citadel).

Upcoming events:

7-9 July ~ Hastilude

Fontaine dans Sable                                       Seneschal: Adriana Lopes de Rodas

May was a quiet month for baronial activities. We started Gab n Garb back up on the 3rd Saturday, and it had a fair showing in May. Wednesday Medieval Muster has been consistently attended, though few heavy fighters have been attending. The A&S officer and the Largesse guild leader have had regular activities for the non-fighters.

Fontaine has 3 demos coming in the next 2 months. Our first demo will be at the Farmington Public Library on Thursday, June 15. The theme of the Library Teen Zone activity for the week is Medieval, so we were invited to demonstrate the fighting and arts and sciences aspects of the Middle Ages. We will demonstrate light and heavy fighting, as well as weaving and possibly illumination and calligraphy.

The next demo is our Medieval Faire and Demo in Aztec, NM on Saturday, June 17. This event serves as our Toy Box, so it is a charity drive for the local Food Pantry. The autocrat of the event is Wyolet Bertrem. It will include a Rapier Tournament, Heavy Tournament, and Archery Tournament the following day, along with demonstrations of various types of A&S and children's activities.

The last demo will be August 18 and 19 at the San Juan County Fair. We were invited to demo in the coliseum. We will be calling on Rio and al-Barran for additional fighters, drummers, dancers, and artisans to make this demo as large as possible.

-His Excellency, Sir Alasdair MacDubhghaill the Scot was made a Venerable Guard.
-The Queen’s own daughter, Katherine le Fayre atte Watere was invested as Princess Royale.

Saturday evening –

-Various landed nobles were not present when Her Majesty’s court began. Please know that is not at all because they were negligent in their duties, but that there was a miscommunication about the processional. Once they arrived, they were welcomed by Her Majesty the Queen.
-Her Majesty noted that there were over 20 horses participating in the equestrian activities.
-Master Avram syn Osvetoslavl’ was released (with great thanks) as Kingdom Scribe, and THL Perryn Coelbrant was sworn in.
-Lady Illaria Joye was made a Companion of the Argent Hart.
-Sir Ronan Supelach was made a Defender of the White Scarf. (Trivia question – without looking it up, can you name the other knights that are also White Scarves?)
-I was about to close Her Majesty’s court, when she, struck with inspiration, demanded that her Champion, Lord Iohann der Fuchs, attend her. Queen Ansteys gave wordfame to Iohann’s actions at Her Favor tourney, where he asked that anyone entering the tourney should go through him first. She praised his character and virtue. While speaking, the Order of Chivalry quietly came forward to kneel behind Johann. Her Majesty the Queen then offered admittance to that august order to Lord Iohann. (Answer to be given at a later date.)

Sunday evening –

-Her Majesty the Queen deigned to give her poor herald a break and announced herself in the processional. She then received the Princess Royale and her Barons and Baronesses as they rode into court on horseback.
-The Barony of Caer Galen announced their new Equestrian Champion, a fellow named Malcolm who was attending his first event. I, myself, witnessed his fine horsemanship earlier in the event.
-The Baron and Baroness of Unser Hafen presented Her Majesty with beautifully illuminated scroll blanks.
-The Kingdom Chronicler, Lady Annika Hoglund, announced the winners of the Blackfox Awards. It is my hope she posts those names soon, as I did not transcribe them, although it seems that Dragonsspine is very lucky to have their award-winning Chronicler.
-An announcement was made about an upcoming Science Fair, organized by Mistress Arcadia and Don Robert. Further details are forthcoming.
-Lord Rino handed out medals to three Outlanders whose IKAC scores exceeded all others. THL Konrad, Lady Dairenn, and Lord Ubertino were those fine archers.
-Her Majesty, Queen Ansteys announced she had received word from Grand Outlandish Tournament that King Lief had offered admittance to the Order of Chivalry to Lord Alexander of Lancaster. The crowd cheered.

-Mistress Sabiha al-Zarqa’ al-Karakiyya was made a Companion of the Golden Pheon for her skill at archery. The beautiful scroll was done by Leticia Attewode and was on papyrus.
-Master Mellitus Rouncivale and the rest of the Calontir Contingent made a presentation on behalf of the Crown of Calontir, and also extolled the generosity and hospitality of the people of the Outlands.
-Sir Bardolf Gunwaldtsson was named the Shield of Chivalry for his fine and honorable actions in Crown Tournament.
-The Order of Defense presented Her Majesty white roses and to each of the landed Baronesses some lovely flowers (I know not what kind they were).
-The autocrat, Mistress Kiara Loftus, made announcements and then was given a multitude of gifts to enjoy and to share with her staff.
-The members of the Order of the Laurel were called forward. Her Majesty declared that there was one that they wished to add to the Order, and then Her Majesty went into the crowd and brought forth The Honorable Lady Asenath de Winter. Her Ladyship was asked to choose a time to give her answer to the Crown. There was much rejoicing in the hall!

Herein lies a report of excitement at the Coronation Feast of King Lief III and Queen Ansteys –

During the first remove, Duke Bela, in his armor, entered the back of the hall. He said these words:

“I am Bela Kos of the Chippendales, knight of the society, Bone Duke of the Outlands and sworn Champion of King Lief the third.

If there be anyone, be they Jarl, Karl or Thrall,

who say that our Sovereign Lord, King Lief third by that name

is not the rightful King of the Outlands, I say that man lies like a false traitor

and I am ready to cross swords at any time to prove your treason.

Here is my gauntlet. Pick it up if you dare.”

Whereupon he threw down his gauntlet and gazed around the hall. Those feasting put down their knives. He nodded to his attendant, who picked up the gauntlet and gave it back to him. His Grace then moved to the middle of the hall and said this:

“If there be anyone, be they noble, freeman or slave,

Who denies that Lief Fairhair is not the undisputed King of the Outlands,

I call you villain and vermin, and I challenge you to a holmgang

Here is my gauntlet. Touch it and name your day of reckoning.”

Again the threw his gauntlet to the floor. Nobody moved. Again he nodded, again the attendant returned his gage. He moved to the front of the hall, standing before the head table, and said this:

“If there be any, of high degree or low,

Who rejects Lief Two-Swords as the True King of the Outlands,

I declare you to be a Nithing and challenge your existence in this hall.

Here is my gauntlet. Take it up, if you have any blood, and I will take it from you.”

His gauntlet was thrown a third time. No one dared breathe, for fear they might draw his gaze to themselves. After a pause, His Grace nodded, and was given his gauntlet. He then knelt before the King, pledging again his sword. His Majesty the King toasted Bela with a goblet shaped like a skull, and then gifted the goblet to His Grace. The hall resounded with cheers.

Also, as dessert was being served, Mistress Ursula Darcy and Earl Mika Longbow were called from the kitchen to the King’s table. The feast both pleased and thoroughly sated Their Majesties, and they proclaimed that Mistress Ursula will be their Royal Dapifer. There was much rejoicing.

Humbly reported,

Herein lies the report of Sunday’s court at the Coronation event of King Lief III and Queen Ansteys –

There were several small courts throughout the day, one before the tournaments began and one after each was done. Here is a list of the highlights of the business conducted.

-Lord Nazir was inducted into the King’s Guard.
-Don Aegeon the Actor won the right to be Protector of the Queen’s Heart.
-Jarl Freana Geardson was made the Rapier of Chivalry.
-Count Robert Magnus won the Queen’s Favor. He now bears one of Her Majesty’s sleeves, which were beautifully embroidered by Baroness Morgan Cheyney.
-Lord Gilbert le Verrat was made the Flower of Chivalry.
-Don Robert Hunteman won the honor to be the Queen’s Defender.
-Special notice was taken by Her Majesty that Lord Cormac O Duinn worked hard to be authorized to fight in all three tournaments. The Queen called him Iron Man.

The fighting throughout the day was honorable and chivalrous. There were pick-up fights and music and singing and joyful conversation. Many hands helped to take down and pack away things as the rain began in earnest.

Delightedly recalled,

Words from our local Seneschals

For the month of: April 2017

Aarquelle                                                                           Seneschal: Generica McKenna

We pulled off Kingdom A&S. We made it through fire and ice to make Newcomers happen. We completed the investiture ceremony. Aarquelle is now a Barony.

Kingdom A&S was more successful than we ever imagined with more than 200 in attendance. The event was donation only with the proceeds to be split between a donation to the Boys and Girls club who let us have the site, the kingdom and our group. Newcomers was slated to be held in Beulah but the weather forecast was foul and we changed to Pueblo at the last minute, with about 150 in attendance. Aarquelle was invested as a Barony during morning court with Tiegr and Audrey as the first baron and baroness.

In 7 years, we moved from near dissolution to barony. We've gone from maybe 10 active members to more than 60. We have a vibrant A&S community, a solid mix of older and new fighters, our offices filled and people begging to become deputies. Our people are stepping up to work on a kingdom level, hosting events, staffing Battlemoor and considering offices. We are the heart of the stag.

Sir Needham is working with the heavy fighters to field an Aarquelle melee squad. Fighter practice has expanded to twice a week. Rapier is about to add a third practice as well. Villaleon has asked to join the Barony, dissolving their Shire. Our next challenge is to join forces and become one group covering SE Colorado. We're going to need to actively explore how to use social media, carpooling, innovative meeting schedules and a host of ideas to make sure every person in our group feels welcome, informed, valuable and wanted no matter where in the Barony they reside. It's a welcome challenge. We love these people; it's going to take thought and work to make it happen.

Upcoming events:

14-16 July ~ Highlands Rapier Camp and War Collegium (Buena Vista)

al-Barran                                                                           Seneschal: Melodia Shaw

Our Monthly meeting on April 30, was held specifically for the people we met the day before at the ren faire. We had 10 new people show up. This is a pretty good showing compared to past years.

The Albuquerque Ren Faire went well considering the weather which included, snow, rain cold temps and wind. We had 87 people from the barony show up to help and approximately 3500 people at the fair.

Outlandish is almost ready. We have one more cleanup. The autocrat for Midwinter has been pick and the event is on the Kingdom Calendar.

Upcoming events:

10-11 March 2018 ~ Crown Tournament

Blackwater Keep                                                  Seneschal: Devon Nightshade

We held one event and continue to have fighter practices and A&S Meetings. At our Collegium and Defender event we had 13 newcomers and at our last fighter practice we had two new folks who want to learn to fight.

At our Collegium and Defender Tourney on April 15th Samilya (Shirlynn Hudspeth) taught a class on common female Anglo-Saxon grave goods, Thyri (Kara Richey) taught a class on Kumihimo cording, Airt (Art Scott) taught a class on beginning archery, how to make bows and arrows. During the month of April Samilya taught a class on SCA scrolls and Dagrun (Katrina Priestley) taught a class on viking wire jewelry.

Lots of folks worked hard to make our event a success:
Lyra (Nannette Arden) made cloth buttons, Hudd de Peth (Thomas Hudspeth) made four scrolls based on the Codex Manesse, Thyri (Kara Richey) made the cord for the prize, Curran (Mike Hernadez) made the site tokens (small swords and boffer swords on lanyards), Hrothgar (Wayne Painter) feast, Dagrun (Katrina Priestley) feast, (Emily, Conrad, and Carl) feast helpers, (Conrad Laun) chain mail napkin holders.  Several of our members received awards from the Crown at our event.

In April Blaiddwyn held one populace meeting, which was converted into a "Not-So-Medieval" Movie Night. It was well attended. We also discussed plans for the upcoming fall semester and the Blaiddwyn Bannerette tournament we are co-sponoring at Grand Outlandish this year.

The spring semester is now over and Blaiddwyn will be going into haitus for the summer months of June and July. We will resume early August in preparations for the Fall Welcome Back days in late August(days yet unknown), and possible Pack Games the weekend following. We have been allocated an office for the 2017-2018 academic year that we can begin having access to in July, as well as an annual budget through UNM ASUNM Student government for the same year.

Citadel of the Southern Pass           Seneschal: Aoife Ruadh inghean Ragnaill

April saw the transition within the Seneschal’s office, a review of current status and projects, and subsequent changes in format and purpose of officer meetings.  IT is my intent to bring an integrated and interactive approach to broadcasting results or meetings, be a cheerleader for various guilds and activities, engage the current officer corps, recruit new officers and deputies as Barony participants show interest.

The Citadel remains consistent in attendance and active engagement by current members.  I see strong indications of excitement, cohesiveness, and expansion into larger projects.  The March / April demo schedule was packed, but we are seeing newcomer involvement increase as well.  The Citadel is blessed with an actively engaged and effective Baron and Baroness, a strong Knight Marshal and Rapier Marshal and Archery Captain.

The Barony now has a Clothier’s Guild, to help both newcomers and veteran players perfect and explore persona enhancements with sewing machines, patterns, ideas and discussion.

Upcoming events:

                  14 May ~ May Day

The archery meeting was successful.  Nine archers took the line and enjoyed themselves. The Captain of Archers announced he would hold weekly practice for those available.  Eleven hardy souls traveled to Fontaine's Sworded Affair and were entertained by good fighting and feasting.   Everyone in the shire is working on A&S projects and Ethan, a newer member, has made a small highly mobile bow stand. Our herald submitted 4 new names and devices for May's presentation and had one resubmission to Northshield.  Two submissions have been completely accepted.  Fighter practice and armoring has had a consistent 5-7 for the weekly practices. A marvelous demonstration was held for home-schoolers in the area.

The chatelaine has welcomed 3 new members with everyone's help and with tremendous aid of the excellent website.  Electronic media is vitally important!  After having an inoperative website for several years, the shire is gaining people because of a workable website, Facebook page and email system.   People are finding us and communication is efficient.  Thanks to our web-minister Ronan n f-Facial mac Connail.

Dragonsspine                                                            Seneschal: Mary of Lyonshall

The good folks of Dragonsspine are happy and content. Our numbers are up and participation is going forward. We are moving in the right direction, as a group. People are venturing outside their 'comfort zones' and trying new things, and getting to know each other better. I am most grateful for this!

Carnival of Venice was successful. A day of games, dancing, bardic, and wonderful food!  We had one demo. Everyone enjoyed it.

We welcome our new Chronicler, Don Antoine de Vallier.  We are in need of an A&S Officer. Fontaine dans Sable                                       Seneschal: Adriana Lopes de Rodas

Fontaine has had a busy month hosting Crown Tournament, Baronial Polling, and 5th Wednesday potluck.
Crown Tournament was a rousing success.  The baronial polling had representation from over half of baronial members. The next Coronet will be THL Anna Katherine and Lord Lingormr.
The 5th Wednesday potluck was also well attended with the return of several old members as well as the most recent.

We have had several officers reporting that email has been an issue. Not the baronial ones, but their personal ones, seem to not be sending with success. We have started using the FB Fontaine Officers' Page as a backup, so, if emails do not go through, I still receive the reports. However, this is not helping with Kingdom uplinks receiving reports in a timely manner.

Upcoming events:

17 June ~ Medieval Fare DEMO

Gleann Medonach                                              Seneschal: Michaela Kunrat

Nothing new to report.

Upcoming events:

The group as a whole is doing well. We are preparing for our upcoming events of NRW and Dragons, as well as starting up the monthly tournaments, which was received very well. Looking into making some sort of "New Comer Token", the idea of a pin with the shires symbol was brought up. Further discussion of this was tabled until next month giving time for people to come up with some ideas.  April- Baroness Keridwen will be up on the 29th and 30th of April to teach a Silk Banner Painting class.

We had good attendance at Kingdom A&S. Lots of classes were taken and two guests from the shire attended. As usual, we are working on members, martial duties, and the day to day issues in the shire.  We noted that in order to increase our numbers, that we must have activities for youth as well as adults. We will be continuing to hold meetings, practices and A&S nights to attract newcomers.

We are planning a new event for June. Tentatively this is being called She Sells Sea Shells. It will be held in conjunction with a tournament. Our next meeting will be a meet and greet for the whole shire to get together. This will be held in Trinidad. We plan to hold an A&S day/evening as soon as scheduling will allow.

Be it known far and wide that the BoD has approved Aarquelle's petition to become a barony.  HAPPY NEWS!

From the Desk of Lord Bernardo dei Medici, Webminister of Citadel of the Southern Pass:

Not so long ago there was a thread about the topic of doing a better job as a Kingdom and a group about information sharing. I have a short, 10-question survey for interested folks to participate in to help us as an organization better understand the ways our members utilize our websites and social media presence.

https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/CST6TYK

Please fill it out and provide feedback to the Kingdom's leadership team so we can keep pushing in a positive direction to better serve you.

The St Martins Collegium will be held in conjunction with the Drystone III event, June 23rd to June 25th 2017.  The site in on Santa Fe National Forest land in a cool Ponderosa Pine forest.

St. Martin’s Collegium will have classes for many heavy weapons styles, fencing styles, games and arts and sciences.  From Basic Sword and Shield by Sir Roland, Italian Long Sword by MOD Siegfried, How to beat a lefty by Sir AElric, Thinking in Fighting by Duke Artan.  There will be non-fighting classes also, Court Speaking by Duke Walric, Viking Hack Silver by Sir Elric.

This event is based on the event “Grace and Valor” which is held every other year in the northern part of the Kingdom of the Outlands.  We strive for this to be a similar event on the open years in the southern part of the Kingdom of the Outlands.

                  26-29 May ~ Condorrieri

Citadel of the Southern Pass           Seneschal: Marco Paolo D’Este

War was amazing. We had a great turnout of members for the Citadel. Congratulation to Lord Raul for placing 2nd in the brewing competition with his mead and his outstanding participation in archery!

Our Archery program is still very successful with attendees ranging from 50-75 people. Citadel Archery completed the Gwyntarian Winter Challenge (http://web.raex.com/~obsidian/wint.html) started in January (results posted). We had a beautiful sunny day with mild winds at the Museum except for one "dust devil" that came through the middle of the range upsetting targets, bow stands, etc. We had a very active crowd of about 35 keeping us busy.

With the blessing of Their Excellencies Tariq and Elieth, the Citadel of the Southern Pass now has a Clothiers Guild!  Beginning in April, the Guild will meet from 6:30p -- 9:30p on the first and third Friday of each month.

We are happy to announce that Lord Esteban de Leon (Gabe Carrejo) has volunteered to become Deputy Chatelaine! Lord Misha'al has had to step down as our Baronial Knight Marshal. It is our pleasure to announce that Lady Aoife Ruadh Inghean Ragnaill has joined our officer corps as Deputy Seneschal.

We'd like to announce the First Annual Saint Thomas Aquinas Renaissance Faire! Saint Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church has asked the Citadel to help them organize this event in the hopes that this will be the first of many successful events. The Faire is scheduled for July 28 - 30, 2017 and more details will be shared as they become available.

                  4 November ~ Holiday Bazaar

Drygestan                                                                                           Seneschal: Christine Woyade

Estrella made it a slow month for the Shire.  We had two A&S classes, and two fighter practices.  We will be resuming out usual activities soon.  We have selected a new location for the Shire trailer, and are awaiting good weather to make the transfer.

15-18 September ~ Santa Fe Renaissance Faire (demo)

Fontaine dans Sable                                       Seneschal: Adriana Lopes de Rodas

February was a quiet month except for preparing for Estrella. However, the barony has a busy spring and summer ahead of us. We have 1 new family that has joined us, and we have several events, demos, and position changes coming up. Muster has been well attended, and will continue on Wednesdays at Sunrise church until the weather is more fair (late April or early May).   The Largesse Guild will be starting back up during Wednesday Muster. We also have our 5th Wednesday Social night and potluck scheduled for 29 March.

We are planning a Medieval Faire in June, and have opened to bids for event steward.  We have been invited to a demo at San Juan County Fair in August.  Our goal is to present a big show of fighters, A&S and all other aspects of the SCA.  We have also been invited to a demo at a private school in Farmington.

Upcoming events:

Hawk’s Hollow                                                         Seneschal: Grellan O'Conchobhair

The Chatelaine office has heard that a school had interest in a demo. We tabled the question if an after school demo would be better or a Saturday morning until a better definition on what schools expect, etc, could be determined.

THL Yuki has Goldkey items at her house for next month’s Newcomers.  Our new Chatelaine also would like to do a Newcomers paper, and will contact the Kingdom Chatelaine regarding that matter.  An A&S display table for events would be nice; we need items to display from the Populace.

Marcus was suggesting an A&S night at TASC and is checking for availability in April.

Upcoming events:

                  6 August ~ St Sebastian’s Archery Tournament

Hinterland                                                                       Seneschal: Rowan

I'm pleased with our progress at present, and will adjust as we need to.  We held March gathering and after a short meeting with lunch; we had a delightful Bardic which everyone participated in. Heraldry is doing nicely with 3 consults and several submissions to Northshield as well as some membership there.

Scribal has a few scroll blanks ready.

A group of us attended Crown Tournament, helping as we can.  Heavy fighting and archery are waiting for good weather and snow melt.

Upcoming events:

28-30 July ~ Defender of the Silver Pass

Scola Metallorum                                                Seneschal: Istvan

Upcoming events:

Saint Golias                                                                    Seneschal: Bela Istvan

Upcoming events:

Unser Hafen                                                                 Seneschal: Soren Thorvaldsson

Our Barony is doing well; we have two fencing practices each week, and one heavy practice.  Our fighters have taken up a collection to offset funds for the cost of our winter fighter practice site.

We hosted a Tri-Baronial A&S event in the beginning of February, that was well attended, including the Crown.  We have set a date for a summer demo at a local Medieval Festival.  By helping out, we can use the site for free at another time.  We will be hosting Fall Crown Tournament, event planning is coming along well.  An idea for a small camping event has been brought forward.

Upcoming events:

                  11-13 August 2017 ~ Crown Tournament

Villaleon                                                                              Seneschal: Unna Farulfsdottir

We are holding our own, with the possible addition of a few new members.  We are continuing to work on the meeting and fighter practice schedules, alternating between Walsenburg and Trinidad.  A&S days, and an event at one of the state parks, are in the beginning stages of planning.

Progress is being made on Juan’s scroll, working with the Spanish Peaks Librarian.  We plan to have a demo day when the scroll is completed.  In a long term project, Millicent of Essex is working on a SCA themed concert for local veterans, in which shire members would participate, in garb.

Upcoming events:

White Mountain                                                     Seneschal: Mingus O’Brien

The Shire holds Fighter Practice every Sunday from 3pm-5pm at Alameda Park in Alamogordo, New Mexico. We meet in the southernmost corner of the park. If you’re new and would like to join us, please contact us so we can make sure loaner armor is available for you if you’d like to try it out! If you’re not interested in fighting, that’s okay too; we’d still love to meet you! Please join us on the third Sunday of the month from 3pm-5pm for our Populace Potluck! This is a great opportunity to meet the fighters, artisans, and officers who reside here in White Mountain. Garb is encouraged, but not required, just bring something to share!

Upcoming events:

Windkeep                                                                         Seneschal: Gwenhwyvar ferch Tewdrig

Everything in Windkeep is the same ol’ – same ol.  We are looking to secure an indoor site for winter practice, and are hoping to meet with a site owner and have it set up by next Fall.  We have had two largesse nights, both successful.  There have also been new fighters to fighter practice.

We are working on a defender tourney, but have not secured a date yet.

Words from our local Seneschals

For the month of: January 2017

Aarquelle                                                                           Seneschal: Syr Gerwyn y Teigr

It has been a great month for Aarquelle; it has been announced that Their Royal Majesties are supporting the advancement to Barony from Shire.  We are now working feverishly on all that entails.  Our officers are determining any new requirements for their offices as we transition.

We held out annual Viking Vntr Vunderlandt event, and had over 100 in attendance.  Her Royal Majesty came and received our petition for advancement at that event.

Upcoming events:

18 February ~ As You Like It (Salida)

8 April ~ Kingdom Arts & Sciences Collegium (Salida)
29 April ~ Aarquelle Newcomers & Investiture (Pueblo)
14-16 July ~ Highlands Rapier Camp and War Collegium (Buena Vista)

Al’Barran                                                                           Seneschal: Ymanya Murray

Al-Barran is well into preparations for war.  The January populace meeting was well attended, and the February populace meeting will be held earlier in the month than usual, to allow for final planning before folks leave for war.  At this meeting, Mistress Melodia will take the office of Seneschal.

Upcoming events:

29 April ~ Albuquerque Renaissance Faire (demo)

Blackwater Keep                                                  Seneschal: Devon Nightshade

Blackwater keep continues to hold monthly general meetings, along with twice monthly A&S and fighter practices; however, the weather has prevented archery practice.

We will be holding an event on 15 April, where we plan to have classes on various topics, and do some fighting.  We intend to support the ENMU production of “Pirates of Pinzance,” by purchasing advertising.

Upcoming events:

15 April ~ Blackwater Keep Collegium and Defender

Blaiddwyn                                                                        Seneschal:

Blaiddwyn is on winter hiatus

Bryngalou                                                                                          Seneschal: Kveldulfr Valbrandsson

The group is working well, and are happy.  Our St. Brigid Day event went well, the Queen gracing us.  Several pieces of Shire garb were needed and several awards given out to Shire members by Her Majesty.  Best of all, a profit was made!

We have a consistent average number of fighters at practice, with no injuries!  We have bi-weekly A&S classes, starting in February, with specific topics and open sewing nights.  We are now looking ahead to WAR, and our May Day event, planned for the second weekend in May.

SPOTLIGHT:  Thanks to Terri, for bringing snacks to the last meeting!

Upcoming events:

                  May ~ May Day

Caer Galen                                                                       Seneschal: Keridwen Andersdottir

The Barony has been quiet, nothing to report.

Upcoming events:

                  7-9 July 2017 ~ Caer Galen Defender

                  28-30 July ~ Enduro

Caerthe                                                                                 Seneschal: Gauvain Eisenbein

Preparations for WAR are well underway.  Caerthe has volunteered to take the 8 PM to Midnight shift on Friday at Estella War.  We will be holding an A&S get together at Kovac and Estefania's House in Englewood on the 2nd and 4th Friday of the month.

Upcoming events:

                  25 March ~ Newcomer’s Collegium
                  26-29 May ~ Condorrieri

Citadel of the Southern Pass           Seneschal: Marco Paolo D’Este

Fighter practices continue on Sundays and Tuesdays, and archery practice on Saturday.  Arts and Sciences nights occur on the second Monday and the fourth Friday of the month.  Baronial Choir Practice takes place on Mondays and Silver Sun Hospitality Night on Wednesdays.  Finally, officers meeting is held the third Wednesday of the month.

Upcoming events:

                  30 April ~ May Day

Draca Mor                                                                                 Seneschal: Saeunn Hrafndottir

The shire continues to plan for events later in the year, securing a site for Summer Tournament and Games (STAG) event.  The Mor You Know has been shifted back to the fall of 2017, with a tentative site arranged.

The Fabulous Fiber Babes will be participating in the Sneffels Fiber Fair in September, teaching various fiber arts, and Egil Thorsen will be participating in the Viking Exhibit at the Denver Museum of Nature and Science.

Shire Gatherings (practice and A&S) will begin again in March, when the weather is more cooperative.  Our Thrown Weapons Marshal, Baroness Annis, is researching the equipment needed to begin thrown weapons practice once the weather stabilizes.

Upcoming events:

12-14 May ~ Grand Junction Renaissance Fair (demo)
Fall 2017 ~ The Mor You Know

Dragonsspine                                                            Seneschal: Mary of Lyonshall

Dragonsspine is doing well – despite the plague of illness and surgeries beset upon our great populace.  Despite it all, fighter practice is well attended, and there is a feeling of camaraderie among the Barony, as we move ahead with new events… and WAR!

I am pleased with the success of the events to date.  Candlemas was a great success, with 171 people attending; everything went seamlessly.  WE did one demo, and were well received.   We have open bids for Champions, expected to be in June.

Upcoming events:

1 April ~ Carnival of Venice
                  6 May 2017 ~ Coronation
                  4 November ~ Holiday Bazaar

Drygestan                                                                                           Seneschal: Christine Woyade

Drygestan is moving forward to put on several events, including Drystone III and St. Martin's Collegium. We will have a financial committee meeting the second Wednesday in February during our A&S meeting, where we will approve budgets for these events and Ren Faire. We hope to have a new Knight Marshall this month; we have 2 good candidates to choose from, so that we can continue to have regular A&S and Fighter Practice. We look forward to Estrella War, where we will be camping as a Shire.

Upcoming events:

15-18 September ~ Santa Fe Renaissance Faire (demo)

Fontaine dans Sable                                       Seneschal: Adriana Lopes de Rodas

January was a typically busy month, with weekly meetings at our Medieval Muster; including fighter practice, A&S, bardic children’s activities and/or chatelaine projects.  The Barony is creating a new list field, using pennants painted with the personal, household and Baronial devices and badges.  Weather, both low temperatures and muddy fields and roads have hampered archery practice.

Fontaine’s 12th Night was held, with court dancing a silent auction, children’s scavenger hunt, a wonderful Court and an amazing feast.  Many members of the barony, and Shire-folk in Rio, received Baronial awards, and were recognized by His Majesty with Kingdom awards.

Two letters were accepted by The Crown, and the Barony will be moving forward with Polling and Investiture in the coming months.  A Town Hall meeting with Q&A is scheduled for 17 February, which will be recorded and available to watch online.  Polling will occur Sunday of Crown Tournament, during the Princess Protector Tournament.

Upcoming events:

11 March 2017 ~ Crown Tournament & Baronial Polling
22 April 2017 ~ Sworded Affaire & Baronial Investiture

Gleann Medonach                                              Seneschal: Michaela Kunrat

The group has been quiet, nothing to report.

Hawk’s Hollow                                                         Seneschal: Grellan O'Conchobhair

We have been active in several areas.  Lord Marcus hosted a largesse / leatherworking workshop to generate simple pouches.  Future largesse workshops were discussed to continue to “feed the need” for A&S and largesse.  Everyone was looking forward to Tri-Baronial A&S competition.  Archery is still going strong.  We are looking forward to Estrella.

Upcoming events:

                  6 August ~ St Sebastian’s Archery Tournament

Hinterland                                                                       Seneschal: Rowan

The group has been quiet, nothing to report.

Nahrun Kabirun                                                    Seneschal: Heinric Von Drachenburg

We are all busily preparing for Estrella, ready to show up in force.  Fighter practices continue twice per week, are heavily attended, as are weekly A&S meetings and Friday armor workshops.

We are in full preparation mode for Siege of the City, and held a fighter practice on the site last month, that was a blast.  Coronation planning is also well underway, and we are beginning to plan for Clan Wars again in Ruidoso, NM.

My replacement has been selected, and approved.  The goal is for him to take the office on 1 March, and I will continue in an advisory role as long as I am able.

Upcoming events:

31 March2017 ~ Siege of the City (City of Rocks state park)
20 May ~ Masked Ball
11-12 November 2017 ~ Coronation

Plattefordham                                                           Seneschal: Zvir L’vov syn Gorin

The last month, we celebrated our Candlemas event with the King.  Our members received numerous awards from His Majesty during His visit.  The event went very well, and thanks to all who participated in the A&S auction, we were able to raise $714.0 to the travel fund.  We were also able to gain two new members due to the event. We are continuing our plans for Norther Realms War and Dragons.  We are looking into getting a fighter practice in Glenrock once per month, to facilitate more involvement from the members that we have in Douglas.  We are putting up fliers at the local college, and possibly putting together a demo.

We will be having a cheese making class in February, and future classes of lampworking (making glass beads) silk banner painting and sourdough bread from a 150 year old starter.  Fighter practices are going well, gaining heavy and light fighters.  We are tentatively planning a 3 kingdom joint fighter practice with Northshield and Artemisia in April or May.

Upcoming events:

June 2017 ~ Northern Realms War
21-23 July 2017 ~ Here There be Dragons

Ram’s Keep                                                                    Seneschal:

The group is dormant

Ravenhyrst                                                                     Seneschal: Anrique de Braga

Our group continues to support the Barony of Caerthe, as best we are able.

Rio de las Animas                                               Seneschal: Geua filia Guy

January saw no action in Rio because of weather.  Road and parking conditions prevented us from meeting nor were we able to conduct business or play. Roads had cleared enough for 6 members were able to attend Fontaine's 12th night.  I appreciate the crown for the generous awards that were given to our members that night.

A new website with current information about the shire was launched, and is now connected to the Kingdom pages and the webmaster's office.  A new email list was established for mass communication as well since Yahoo groups has been difficult.

February 5 was Rio's first 2017 meeting; we tried a new format.  Everyone brought their own lunch; we had short reports; everyone worked on a project; heraldry consults were held all while we watched the indoor fighter practice.  The American Legion hall was very welcoming. Weather prevents outdoors fighter practice and archery.

Upcoming events:

28-30 July ~ Defender of the Silver Pass

Scola Metallorum                                                Seneschal: Istvan

Returning from winter hiatus

Saint Golias                                                                    Seneschal: Bela Istvan

The college is up and running again.  Southern War Practice, in early February, was a great success.  Practice went smoothly and everyone had a good time.  Niccolo has taken the position of Deputy Seneschal, with the intention of taking the Seneschal position in May.

Upcoming events:

Unser Hafen                                                                 Seneschal: Soren Thorvaldsson

We are meeting the first Tuesday of each month at Edwards Hall at CSU to learn Medieval and Renaissance Court Dancing (with a few Folk Dances thrown in).  The Barony hosts a revel the second Thursday of every month. Everyone is welcome, come in garb if you can and bring a dish or drink to share. We will be doing rapier and armored fighting as well as some combat archery, games and fun. Fighter Practice is held at CSU.

Preparations for Crown Tournament are underway.

Upcoming events:

                  11-13 August 2017 ~ Crown Tournament

Villaleon                                                                              Seneschal: Unna Farulfsdottir

We are off to a quiet start to 2017, and are looking forward to adding two more members to our roster.  We had three Shire-folk receive awards from Her Majesty, at Viking Vntr Vunderlandt.  We continue working to integrate the two population groups when it comes to A&S and fighter practices.

We are looking forward to working with Aarquelle, as they transition to Barony, and will consider the future relationship between our groups as they have settled into their new status.

Upcoming events:

White Mountain                                                     Seneschal: Mingus O’Brien

The group has been quiet, nothing to report.

Windkeep                                                                         Seneschal: Gwenhwyvar ferch Tewdrig

Words from our local Seneschals

For the month of: December 2016

Aarquelle                                                                           Seneschal: Syr eErwyn y Teigr

December was a quiet month for Aarquelle.  Weather and holidays limited our practices, and in some cases our travels.  We held out annual holiday party, with over 50 people attending.  We are now gearing up for Viking Vinter Vunderlandt

Upcoming events:

                  14 January 2017 ~ Viking Vintr Vunderlandt

February ~ As You Like It

8 April 2017 ~ Kingdom Arts & Sciences Collegium

14-16 July 2017 ~ Highlands Rapier Camp and War Collegium

Al’Barran                                                                           Seneschal: Ymanya Murray

The December Populace meeting was cancelled, in favor of the al-Thing coinciding with Midwinter War Practice.  Midwinter went well, Shyla and her team put together a smooth and enjoyable event.  Many people pitched in to make the event successful, from planning, onsite and the amazing feast crew.

Mistress Melodia has been selected as the next Seneschal of al-Barrran.  I could not be more thrilled, both to work with her over the transition and to leave the office in her hands.  I could not have a better successor.  She is already working with the city, planning Ren Fair in earnest.

The financial committee has approved extending the al-Things, to see if they are supportable long term.

SPOTLIGHT:  I cannot thank Elisee enough for jumping in and taking over Midwinter feast, when the original feast coordinator could no longer do it.  It was especially awesome given that we didn’t have the kitchen.  Her whole crew was incredible.

Upcoming events:

Blackwater Keep                                                  Seneschal: Devon

Not much has occurred during the holiday season.  We have continued to have monthly group meetings, A&S meetings and fighter practices.  We are planning on having a full day get-together, in late February or early March, to do some workshops and have fun.

Upcoming events:

Blaiddwyn                                                                        Seneschal: Mordygan MacGregor

Blaiddwyn is on winter hiatus.

Upcoming events:

Bryngalou                                                                                          Seneschal: Einarr Skallagrimmsson

Everything is positive!  We have motivated and involved member; good participation and input!

We had a relatively quiet month, with the holidays, but did find tme to get together to paint Shire banners.  Thank you to all who dedicated their time on the project.  We are looking at a way to hold more A&S classes, such as on a weekly or biweekly basis.  Shire members have volunteered already to teach several classes and set up sewing times to teach garb making.

St. Brigid’s Day feast is upcoming, and the whole Shire has dedicated much of their time and effort to get this event ready.

Upcoming events:

                  21 January 2017 ~ St. Brigid’s Day Celebration

Caer Galen                                                                       Seneschal: Keridwen Andersdottir

Midwinter 2016 was fantastic!

A 2017 planning session, and monthly meeting was held at Dwen’s house (complete with tacos and margaritas!) Keridwen will be running Caer Galen Defender, and Enduro will be run by Rowenna and Nico.  A Battlemoor land coorindator volunteered, Lady, Annabel, as well as acting as intermediary between the Battlemoor autocrat team and Caer Galen.  THL Shoshanna will be autocrat for Toys for Tots, in the fall.  We did some brainstorming on Midwinter 2017, considering a Mongolian theme.

Upcoming events:

                  7-9 July 2017 ~ Caer Galen Defender

                  28-30 July ~ Enduro

Caerthe                                                                                 Seneschal:

Upcoming events:

                  7 January 2017 ~ Twelfth Night

Citadel of the Southern Pass           Seneschal: Marco D’Este

The group is in a really healthy spot and continues to grow in overall attendance.  Our local brewery group continues to experiment with different types of drinks, we held an impressive candle making class that went very well and our Calyx Harmoniae impresses every time the Barony gets to hear their amazing voices.  We have openings for the officer positions of Rook Herald and Chronicler, the A&S officer change-over went really well.

The Citadel has been working hard to prepare for 12th Night; everything should be in order and ready to go.  Feast, Court and War Practice are well planned and good to go.

SPOTLIGHT: Brandon Sivret has been working for over four months on arming the local populace with gear for Estrella War.  Out of his own kindness, he has helped to produce three full kits and continues to produce even more.  He has also produced several crossbows, so we should see more bolts in the air this year.  He has been taking time out of his life to teach people that it is not impossible to get out on the field.

Upcoming events:

21-22 January 2017 ~ Twelfth Night and War Practice

Draca Mor                                                                                 Seneschal: Saeunn

Our Yule Celebration was held in December.  A site has been found for The Mor You Know, and A&S event, tentatively planned for 22-23 April.  Plans are being made for a demonstration at a local Renaissance Faire in May.  A site for STAG is being investigated, and is planned to occur in late summer.  We are continuing to plan for two Kingdom level events, to occur in 2017.  Local A&S classes are being scheduled for the new year.

Upcoming events:

22-23 April ~ The Mor You Know

Dragonsspine                                                            Seneschal: Mary of Lyonshall

The Barony is doing well.  We are looking forward to the upcoming events (Candlemas, Carnival and Coronation) and a good 2017.  We have selected an autocrat team for Carnival of Venice and the event is moving forward.

Fighter practice is well attended, with a few new fighters.  Mistress Lydia is working on new classes and projects for A&S.  Letters are being accepted for the Chronicler office.

Upcoming events:

                  28 January 2017 ~ Candlemas

1 April ~ Carnival of Venice

                  6 May 2017 ~ Coronation

Drygestan                                                                                           Seneschal: Christine Woyade

It has been a quiet holiday season, kicked off by a very productive populace meeting.  We decided on 2017 events, and solicited bids.  We plan to support Bryngolau’s St. Brigid’s Day Feast, instead of hosting a separate Yule.  We are planning to host several events this year, including Ren Faire, ComiCon and Drystone with the Company of St Martin.

Upcoming events:

Fontaine dans Sable                                       Seneschal: Adriana Lopes de Rodas

December was an uneventful month for Fontaine, after a successful demo at the Farmington Public Library on 5 December.  Wednesday Medieval Muster continues to be well attended with Rapier and A&S participants.  We hope to see more heavy fighters in the upcoming weeks, before War.

The barony has a new Baronial Scribe, THL Anna Katherine and Mistress Elizabeth has agreed to become Deputy Seneschal.  Letters of intent to poll as the next Coronet of Fontaine are being accepted until 31 January.

Upcoming events:

14 January 2017 ~ Twelfth Night and War practice

11 March 2017 ~ Crown Tournament

22 April 2017 ~ Sworded Affaire

Gleann Medonach                                              Seneschal:

Upcoming events:

Hawk’s Hollow                                                         Seneschal: Grellan O'Conchobhair

We have slowed during these winter months, with archery ongoing, and preparations for Caerthan 12th Night.  The new A&S officer is leading brainstorming discussions on an “A&S sweatshop” to create largesse for the Crown.  We are also looking at running an event, other than St. Sebastian’s, and have begun idea formation.

The Shire is in a great place right now, with the addition of 7 new people in December.  Students will be back from winter break in about two weeks.  We are holding regular, weekly, events attended by 35-40 people.  Fighter practice alone included visitors from other groups, and several first time fighters.  The weekly armor workshop night is still going strong; despite the cooling of the weather (I bet you CO people think that is funny!)

We have revived the City of Rocks event and planning is currently underway.  We have also selected a date for the masked ball, tentatively 20 May.

The office of Seneschal is open to letters of intent, as I step down.  I am very confident in the officers, and my deputy, that the Shire is well suited to the transition.

SPOTLIGHT:  Big round of huzzahs to my deputy Seneschal Seamus, who gives sage advice and listens well, when people wish to scream.
