Welcome to the arts and sciences in the Outlands!
We can't wait to get to know you and help you with any questions you may have. Hopefully this will help you find what you are looking for and get excited about the arts and sciences.
Where can I figure out what the SCA has to offer in the arts and sciences?
- If they did it prior to 1600 AD, there is someone in the SCA who does it! Feel free to contact your group's Arts and Sciences Officer for more information. Some groups do not have an Arts and Sciences Officer. You can also inquire from your group's Chatelaine (newcomer's helper) or Seneschal (group president). Your group may have a Facebook group as well.
Additionally, look at the kingdom's resources and the SCA and internet at large. The Outlands has Facebook groups devoted to arts and sciences at large as well as several specific arts and sciences like scribal, fiber, and glassworkers. The Outlands Arts and Sciences Portal has video classes, a repository of projects that people have created, and past competition entries at moas.outlands.org/. The SCA at large has Facebook groups devoted to arts and sciences in general, specific arts and sciences of all kinds, specific time periods, and specific places. A quick search will show you so many options! Also look at non-SCA Facebook groups for the art or science you are interested in.
I'm at an event and see someone doing something cool. Is it okay to interrupt them?
- Most people are more than happy to answer questions about what they are doing! Granted, if someone is in the middle of a song or poem performance, please wait until they are finished and then ask your questions. If someone is sitting somewhere comfortable and doing their art like spinning, sewing, making glass beads, painting, leatherworking, or something else they are probably very happy to talk about their project. Also, if you see something doing something cool online, ask questions as well!
Are there any classes where I can learn more about arts and sciences?
- Of course! Once a year the Outlands hosts an arts and sciences symposium with a full day of lots of classes. Classes may also be hosted by different groups online or in person. There are also prerecorded classes available on the Outlands YouTube and the Royal University of the Outlands page (www.roiu.outlands.org/). Many other kingdoms have classes on video as well.
Any questions can also be sent to the Kingdom Arts and Sciences Minister at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.
