The Stag's Call

The Blog for the Kingdom of the Outlands

Words from our local Seneschals

For the month of: February 2017

Aarquelle                                                                           Seneschal: Syr Gerwyn y Teigr

February got pretty busy here in Aarquelle as we began preparations for our advancement to Barony status. Alongside of this, we are working on the Kingdom A&S Collegium. We've got a month or so of very exciting work ahead of us!

Upcoming events:

8 April ~ Kingdom Arts & Sciences Collegium –AND- Baronial Polling (Salida)

29 April ~ Aarquelle Newcomers & Investiture (Pueblo)

14-16 July ~ Highlands Rapier Camp and War Collegium (Buena Vista)

al-Barran                                                                           Seneschal: Melodia Shaw

Al-Barran has been doing well this past month.  We had our meeting early in February, because of war.  War was heavily attended, and we had a new gate for the Barony camp entrance.  Plans with the City of Albuquerque are moving forward for the Ren Faire.  The Grand Outlandish autocrat team has been selected, Lady Bellatumara and Sir Fierien, and planning has begun.

We have created a Google drive to archive reports and files on events, so future officers and autocrats have access.  We are looking into creating a cookbook to sell as a fundraiser.

Upcoming events:

29 April ~ Albuquerque Renaissance Faire (demo)

                  25-29 May ~ Grand Outlandish

Blackwater Keep                                                  Seneschal: Devon Nightshade

We continue to meet monthly for business / general meetings, fighter practices on at least a twice weekly basis, and A&S meetings twice a month.  We are currently looking to change out meeting site, to a quieter place.

Planning is ongoing for the Collegium and Defender.

Upcoming events:

15 April ~ Blackwater Keep Collegium and Defender

Blaiddwyn                                                                        Seneschal:

Blaiddwyn will be holding coordination meetings on the 2nd & 4th Thursdays of the month, starting March 30th.  We will be in the Scholars room on the second floor of the Student Union Building, which is centrally located on UNM campus (Next to Popejoy Theatre) from 5:30pm-7:30pm.

Upcoming events:

Bryngalou                                                                                          Seneschal: Kveldulfr Valbrandsson

The Shire of Bryngolau sponsors numerous activities for our members.   We host a weekly fighters practice where individual and group combat is practiced and informal instruction takes place.  SCA combat is a combat discipline developed by the Society for Creative Anachronism based on historical combat practiced in medieval Europe.  Open project A&S every other Wednesday, at the Los Alamos, NM library meeting room, 5 PM until 8:30 PM.  Hopefully this will be an ongoing event.  Please plan on joining us. Help with projects will be available!

Upcoming events:

                  May ~ May Day

Caer Galen                                                                       Seneschal: Keridwen Andersdottir

Doing well -- Lots of enthusiasm from Estrella war where a great majority of Caer Galen attended.  Mistress Asta is working on reducing the amount of loaner-garb for folks, having 6 full tubs of it. She will gift some to Arquelle's Newcomers as well as to some other newcomer events.  Midwinter site is reserved, and will be on the Kingdom calendar soon.  Planning is underway for other summer and fall events.

Upcoming events:

                  7-9 July 2017 ~ Caer Galen Defender

                  28-30 July ~ Enduro

15 October ~ Toys for Tots

Caerthe                                                                                 Seneschal: Gauvain Eisenbein

We will be holding a A&S get together at Kovac and Estefania’s House in Englewood.  If there is a weekend event that weekend, the get together will be postponed until the next scheduled gathering.

We have a lot of the tools necessary for everything from making tents to making armour and a spattering of other arts.  The only thing we ask is that you bring your own materials or cover the costs if you need something that we keep on hand. If you are looking to make something in particular and wondering what help we can provide via knowledge or tools, please don't be afraid to ask.  We are always happy to help however we can.

We hope to see your smiling faces soon.

Upcoming events:

                  25 March ~ Newcomer’s Collegium

                  26-29 May ~ Condorrieri

Citadel of the Southern Pass           Seneschal: Marco Paolo D’Este

War was amazing. We had a great turnout of members for the Citadel. Congratulation to Lord Raul for placing 2nd in the brewing competition with his mead and his outstanding participation in archery!

Our Archery program is still very successful with attendees ranging from 50-75 people. Citadel Archery completed the Gwyntarian Winter Challenge (http://web.raex.com/~obsidian/wint.html) started in January (results posted). We had a beautiful sunny day with mild winds at the Museum except for one "dust devil" that came through the middle of the range upsetting targets, bow stands, etc. We had a very active crowd of about 35 keeping us busy.

With the blessing of Their Excellencies Tariq and Elieth, the Citadel of the Southern Pass now has a Clothiers Guild!  Beginning in April, the Guild will meet from 6:30p -- 9:30p on the first and third Friday of each month.

We are happy to announce that Lord Esteban de Leon (Gabe Carrejo) has volunteered to become Deputy Chatelaine! Lord Misha'al has had to step down as our Baronial Knight Marshal. It is our pleasure to announce that Lady Aoife Ruadh Inghean Ragnaill has joined our officer corps as Deputy Seneschal.

We'd like to announce the First Annual Saint Thomas Aquinas Renaissance Faire! Saint Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church has asked the Citadel to help them organize this event in the hopes that this will be the first of many successful events. The Faire is scheduled for July 28 - 30, 2017 and more details will be shared as they become available.

Upcoming events:

                  30 April ~ May Day

Draca Mor                                                                                 Seneschal: Saeunn Hrafndottir

The Shire continues to work on finding an appropriate site for STAG, and planning continues.  The Mor You Know A&S event is shifted to fall of 2017, the site for this event has been identified but dates need to be determined and the paperwork completed. May 12th-14th, the Shire will be holding a Demo at the Grand Junction Renaissance Fair.

Various Local A&S classes (lampworking, arrow fletching, illumination, nalebinding needle making (antler and bone)) dates will be determined.  Starting March 10th, 2017 Egil Thorsen will be participating in a Viking Exhibit at the Denver Museum of Nature and Science. Baroness Aniss has entered the Tribaronial A&S Competition (card weaving, etc.)

Upcoming events:

12-14 May ~ Grand Junction Renaissance Fair (demo)

Fall 2017 ~ The Mor You Know

Dragonsspine                                                            Seneschal: Mary of Lyonshall

Dragonsspine continues to come together as a more integrated group, which pleases me greatly.  We have had three successful demos, several A&S classes and new fighters to fighter practices.  We are seeking officers for A&S officer, Minister of Children and Chronicler.

War was great!  Dragonsspine had a much larger group attending this year.

Upcoming events:

1 April ~ Carnival of Venice

                  6 May 2017 ~ Coronation

                  4 November ~ Holiday Bazaar

Drygestan                                                                                           Seneschal: Christine Woyade

Estrella made it a slow month for the Shire.  We had two A&S classes, and two fighter practices.  We will be resuming out usual activities soon.  We have selected a new location for the Shire trailer, and are awaiting good weather to make the transfer.

A date for Drystone III and St Matin’s Collegium have been selected, with approval of the budget and preliminary plans.

Upcoming events:

23-25 June ~ Drystone III and St Matin’s Collegium

15-18 September ~ Santa Fe Renaissance Faire (demo)

Fontaine dans Sable                                       Seneschal: Adriana Lopes de Rodas

February was a quiet month except for preparing for Estrella. However, the barony has a busy spring and summer ahead of us. We have 1 new family that has joined us, and we have several events, demos, and position changes coming up. Muster has been well attended, and will continue on Wednesdays at Sunrise church until the weather is more fair (late April or early May).   The Largesse Guild will be starting back up during Wednesday Muster. We also have our 5th Wednesday Social night and potluck scheduled for 29 March.

We are planning a Medieval Faire in June, and have opened to bids for event steward.  We have been invited to a demo at San Juan County Fair in August.  Our goal is to present a big show of fighters, A&S and all other aspects of the SCA.  We have also been invited to a demo at a private school in Farmington.

Upcoming events:

22 April 2017 ~ Sworded Affaire & Baronial Investiture

10 June ~ Medieval Fare DEMO

Gleann Medonach                                              Seneschal: Michaela Kunrat

The group has been quiet, nothing to report.

Upcoming events:

Hawk’s Hollow                                                         Seneschal: Grellan O'Conchobhair

The Chatelaine office has heard that a school had interest in a demo. We tabled the question if an after school demo would be better or a Saturday morning until a better definition on what schools expect, etc, could be determined.

THL Yuki has Goldkey items at her house for next month’s Newcomers.  Our new Chatelaine also would like to do a Newcomers paper, and will contact the Kingdom Chatelaine regarding that matter.  An A&S display table for events would be nice; we need items to display from the Populace.

Marcus was suggesting an A&S night at TASC and is checking for availability in April.

Upcoming events:

                  6 August ~ St Sebastian’s Archery Tournament

Hinterland                                                                       Seneschal: Rowan

The group has been quiet, nothing to report.

Upcoming events:

Nahrun Kabirun                                                    Seneschal: Hayate Tachibana

Weekly A&S continues, with an average of 30-50 per week.  Armor workshop also has heavy attendance.

Planning committees meet regularly.  Siege of the City event is in final preparations.  Masked Ball event has an approved budget, and discussions continue with the Las Cruces Arts Council on the Ren Faire.  Finally, we continue preparations for Coronation this fall.

Upcoming events:

31 March 2017 ~ Siege of the City (City of Rocks state park)

20-21 May ~ Masked Ball

                  11-12 November 2017 ~ Coronation

Plattefordham                                                           Seneschal: Zvir L’vov syn Gorin

Our group is doing well; preparing for our big event of the year, Northern Realms War, in June, with the Northshield shire of Noriguard.  We are also preparing for Dragons.  We have A&S classes planned: sourdough and banner making.

The Shire shed needs to be moved, and an inventory of the Shire belongings made.

Upcoming events:

June 2017 ~ Northern Realms War

21-23 July 2017 ~ Here There be Dragons

Ram’s Keep                                                                    Seneschal:

The group is dormant.

Upcoming events:

Ravenhyrst                                                                     Seneschal: Anrique de Braga

We welcome you to attend our local meetings and events, every other Friday we have an A&S Night. The dates and times will be posted on the group Facebook page. Please come join us. Feel free to contact me if you any questions.

Upcoming events:

Rio de las Animas                                               Seneschal: Geua filia Guy

I'm pleased with our progress at present, and will adjust as we need to.  We held March gathering and after a short meeting with lunch; we had a delightful Bardic which everyone participated in. Heraldry is doing nicely with 3 consults and several submissions to Northshield as well as some membership there.

Scribal has a few scroll blanks ready.

A group of us attended Crown Tournament, helping as we can.  Heavy fighting and archery are waiting for good weather and snow melt.

Upcoming events:

28-30 July ~ Defender of the Silver Pass

Scola Metallorum                                                Seneschal: Istvan

Returning from winter hiatus

Upcoming events:

9 April ~ Light Metal Mayhem

Saint Golias                                                                    Seneschal: Bela Istvan

Everything is well here at Golias.  Those fighters who went had a great time at Estrella. Beyond that, it is business as usual here.

Upcoming events:

Unser Hafen                                                                 Seneschal: Soren Thorvaldsson

Our Barony is doing well; we have two fencing practices each week, and one heavy practice.  Our fighters have taken up a collection to offset funds for the cost of our winter fighter practice site.

We hosted a Tri-Baronial A&S event in the beginning of February, that was well attended, including the Crown.  We have set a date for a summer demo at a local Medieval Festival.  By helping out, we can use the site for free at another time.  We will be hosting Fall Crown Tournament, event planning is coming along well.  An idea for a small camping event has been brought forward.

Upcoming events:

                  11-13 August 2017 ~ Crown Tournament

Villaleon                                                                              Seneschal: Unna Farulfsdottir

We are holding our own, with the possible addition of a few new members.  We are continuing to work on the meeting and fighter practice schedules, alternating between Walsenburg and Trinidad.  A&S days, and an event at one of the state parks, are in the beginning stages of planning.

Progress is being made on Juan’s scroll, working with the Spanish Peaks Librarian.  We plan to have a demo day when the scroll is completed.  In a long term project, Millicent of Essex is working on a SCA themed concert for local veterans, in which shire members would participate, in garb.

Upcoming events:

White Mountain                                                     Seneschal: Mingus O’Brien

The Shire holds Fighter Practice every Sunday from 3pm-5pm at Alameda Park in Alamogordo, New Mexico. We meet in the southernmost corner of the park. If you’re new and would like to join us, please contact us so we can make sure loaner armor is available for you if you’d like to try it out! If you’re not interested in fighting, that’s okay too; we’d still love to meet you! Please join us on the third Sunday of the month from 3pm-5pm for our Populace Potluck! This is a great opportunity to meet the fighters, artisans, and officers who reside here in White Mountain. Garb is encouraged, but not required, just bring something to share!

Upcoming events:

Windkeep                                                                         Seneschal: Gwenhwyvar ferch Tewdrig

Everything in Windkeep is the same ol’ – same ol.  We are looking to secure an indoor site for winter practice, and are hoping to meet with a site owner and have it set up by next Fall.  We have had two largesse nights, both successful.  There have also been new fighters to fighter practice.

We are working on a defender tourney, but have not secured a date yet.

Words from our local Seneschals

For the month of: January 2017

Aarquelle                                                                           Seneschal: Syr Gerwyn y Teigr

It has been a great month for Aarquelle; it has been announced that Their Royal Majesties are supporting the advancement to Barony from Shire.  We are now working feverishly on all that entails.  Our officers are determining any new requirements for their offices as we transition.

We held out annual Viking Vntr Vunderlandt event, and had over 100 in attendance.  Her Royal Majesty came and received our petition for advancement at that event.

Upcoming events:

18 February ~ As You Like It (Salida)

8 April ~ Kingdom Arts & Sciences Collegium (Salida)
29 April ~ Aarquelle Newcomers & Investiture (Pueblo)
14-16 July ~ Highlands Rapier Camp and War Collegium (Buena Vista)

Al’Barran                                                                           Seneschal: Ymanya Murray

Al-Barran is well into preparations for war.  The January populace meeting was well attended, and the February populace meeting will be held earlier in the month than usual, to allow for final planning before folks leave for war.  At this meeting, Mistress Melodia will take the office of Seneschal.

Upcoming events:

29 April ~ Albuquerque Renaissance Faire (demo)

Blackwater Keep                                                  Seneschal: Devon Nightshade

Blackwater keep continues to hold monthly general meetings, along with twice monthly A&S and fighter practices; however, the weather has prevented archery practice.

We will be holding an event on 15 April, where we plan to have classes on various topics, and do some fighting.  We intend to support the ENMU production of “Pirates of Pinzance,” by purchasing advertising.

Upcoming events:

15 April ~ Blackwater Keep Collegium and Defender

Blaiddwyn                                                                        Seneschal:

Blaiddwyn is on winter hiatus

Bryngalou                                                                                          Seneschal: Kveldulfr Valbrandsson

The group is working well, and are happy.  Our St. Brigid Day event went well, the Queen gracing us.  Several pieces of Shire garb were needed and several awards given out to Shire members by Her Majesty.  Best of all, a profit was made!

We have a consistent average number of fighters at practice, with no injuries!  We have bi-weekly A&S classes, starting in February, with specific topics and open sewing nights.  We are now looking ahead to WAR, and our May Day event, planned for the second weekend in May.

SPOTLIGHT:  Thanks to Terri, for bringing snacks to the last meeting!

Upcoming events:

                  May ~ May Day

Caer Galen                                                                       Seneschal: Keridwen Andersdottir

The Barony has been quiet, nothing to report.

Upcoming events:

                  7-9 July 2017 ~ Caer Galen Defender

                  28-30 July ~ Enduro

Caerthe                                                                                 Seneschal: Gauvain Eisenbein

Preparations for WAR are well underway.  Caerthe has volunteered to take the 8 PM to Midnight shift on Friday at Estella War.  We will be holding an A&S get together at Kovac and Estefania's House in Englewood on the 2nd and 4th Friday of the month.

Upcoming events:

                  25 March ~ Newcomer’s Collegium
                  26-29 May ~ Condorrieri

Citadel of the Southern Pass           Seneschal: Marco Paolo D’Este

Fighter practices continue on Sundays and Tuesdays, and archery practice on Saturday.  Arts and Sciences nights occur on the second Monday and the fourth Friday of the month.  Baronial Choir Practice takes place on Mondays and Silver Sun Hospitality Night on Wednesdays.  Finally, officers meeting is held the third Wednesday of the month.

Upcoming events:

                  30 April ~ May Day

Draca Mor                                                                                 Seneschal: Saeunn Hrafndottir

The shire continues to plan for events later in the year, securing a site for Summer Tournament and Games (STAG) event.  The Mor You Know has been shifted back to the fall of 2017, with a tentative site arranged.

The Fabulous Fiber Babes will be participating in the Sneffels Fiber Fair in September, teaching various fiber arts, and Egil Thorsen will be participating in the Viking Exhibit at the Denver Museum of Nature and Science.

Shire Gatherings (practice and A&S) will begin again in March, when the weather is more cooperative.  Our Thrown Weapons Marshal, Baroness Annis, is researching the equipment needed to begin thrown weapons practice once the weather stabilizes.

Upcoming events:

12-14 May ~ Grand Junction Renaissance Fair (demo)
Fall 2017 ~ The Mor You Know

Dragonsspine                                                            Seneschal: Mary of Lyonshall

Dragonsspine is doing well – despite the plague of illness and surgeries beset upon our great populace.  Despite it all, fighter practice is well attended, and there is a feeling of camaraderie among the Barony, as we move ahead with new events… and WAR!

I am pleased with the success of the events to date.  Candlemas was a great success, with 171 people attending; everything went seamlessly.  WE did one demo, and were well received.   We have open bids for Champions, expected to be in June.

Upcoming events:

1 April ~ Carnival of Venice
                  6 May 2017 ~ Coronation
                  4 November ~ Holiday Bazaar

Drygestan                                                                                           Seneschal: Christine Woyade

Drygestan is moving forward to put on several events, including Drystone III and St. Martin's Collegium. We will have a financial committee meeting the second Wednesday in February during our A&S meeting, where we will approve budgets for these events and Ren Faire. We hope to have a new Knight Marshall this month; we have 2 good candidates to choose from, so that we can continue to have regular A&S and Fighter Practice. We look forward to Estrella War, where we will be camping as a Shire.

Upcoming events:

15-18 September ~ Santa Fe Renaissance Faire (demo)

Fontaine dans Sable                                       Seneschal: Adriana Lopes de Rodas

January was a typically busy month, with weekly meetings at our Medieval Muster; including fighter practice, A&S, bardic children’s activities and/or chatelaine projects.  The Barony is creating a new list field, using pennants painted with the personal, household and Baronial devices and badges.  Weather, both low temperatures and muddy fields and roads have hampered archery practice.

Fontaine’s 12th Night was held, with court dancing a silent auction, children’s scavenger hunt, a wonderful Court and an amazing feast.  Many members of the barony, and Shire-folk in Rio, received Baronial awards, and were recognized by His Majesty with Kingdom awards.

Two letters were accepted by The Crown, and the Barony will be moving forward with Polling and Investiture in the coming months.  A Town Hall meeting with Q&A is scheduled for 17 February, which will be recorded and available to watch online.  Polling will occur Sunday of Crown Tournament, during the Princess Protector Tournament.

Upcoming events:

11 March 2017 ~ Crown Tournament & Baronial Polling
22 April 2017 ~ Sworded Affaire & Baronial Investiture

Gleann Medonach                                              Seneschal: Michaela Kunrat

The group has been quiet, nothing to report.

Hawk’s Hollow                                                         Seneschal: Grellan O'Conchobhair

We have been active in several areas.  Lord Marcus hosted a largesse / leatherworking workshop to generate simple pouches.  Future largesse workshops were discussed to continue to “feed the need” for A&S and largesse.  Everyone was looking forward to Tri-Baronial A&S competition.  Archery is still going strong.  We are looking forward to Estrella.

Upcoming events:

                  6 August ~ St Sebastian’s Archery Tournament

Hinterland                                                                       Seneschal: Rowan

The group has been quiet, nothing to report.

Nahrun Kabirun                                                    Seneschal: Heinric Von Drachenburg

We are all busily preparing for Estrella, ready to show up in force.  Fighter practices continue twice per week, are heavily attended, as are weekly A&S meetings and Friday armor workshops.

We are in full preparation mode for Siege of the City, and held a fighter practice on the site last month, that was a blast.  Coronation planning is also well underway, and we are beginning to plan for Clan Wars again in Ruidoso, NM.

My replacement has been selected, and approved.  The goal is for him to take the office on 1 March, and I will continue in an advisory role as long as I am able.

Upcoming events:

31 March2017 ~ Siege of the City (City of Rocks state park)
20 May ~ Masked Ball
11-12 November 2017 ~ Coronation

Plattefordham                                                           Seneschal: Zvir L’vov syn Gorin

The last month, we celebrated our Candlemas event with the King.  Our members received numerous awards from His Majesty during His visit.  The event went very well, and thanks to all who participated in the A&S auction, we were able to raise $714.0 to the travel fund.  We were also able to gain two new members due to the event. We are continuing our plans for Norther Realms War and Dragons.  We are looking into getting a fighter practice in Glenrock once per month, to facilitate more involvement from the members that we have in Douglas.  We are putting up fliers at the local college, and possibly putting together a demo.

We will be having a cheese making class in February, and future classes of lampworking (making glass beads) silk banner painting and sourdough bread from a 150 year old starter.  Fighter practices are going well, gaining heavy and light fighters.  We are tentatively planning a 3 kingdom joint fighter practice with Northshield and Artemisia in April or May.

Upcoming events:

June 2017 ~ Northern Realms War
21-23 July 2017 ~ Here There be Dragons

Ram’s Keep                                                                    Seneschal:

The group is dormant

Ravenhyrst                                                                     Seneschal: Anrique de Braga

Our group continues to support the Barony of Caerthe, as best we are able.

Rio de las Animas                                               Seneschal: Geua filia Guy

January saw no action in Rio because of weather.  Road and parking conditions prevented us from meeting nor were we able to conduct business or play. Roads had cleared enough for 6 members were able to attend Fontaine's 12th night.  I appreciate the crown for the generous awards that were given to our members that night.

A new website with current information about the shire was launched, and is now connected to the Kingdom pages and the webmaster's office.  A new email list was established for mass communication as well since Yahoo groups has been difficult.

February 5 was Rio's first 2017 meeting; we tried a new format.  Everyone brought their own lunch; we had short reports; everyone worked on a project; heraldry consults were held all while we watched the indoor fighter practice.  The American Legion hall was very welcoming. Weather prevents outdoors fighter practice and archery.

Upcoming events:

28-30 July ~ Defender of the Silver Pass

Scola Metallorum                                                Seneschal: Istvan

Returning from winter hiatus

Saint Golias                                                                    Seneschal: Bela Istvan

The college is up and running again.  Southern War Practice, in early February, was a great success.  Practice went smoothly and everyone had a good time.  Niccolo has taken the position of Deputy Seneschal, with the intention of taking the Seneschal position in May.

Upcoming events:

Unser Hafen                                                                 Seneschal: Soren Thorvaldsson

We are meeting the first Tuesday of each month at Edwards Hall at CSU to learn Medieval and Renaissance Court Dancing (with a few Folk Dances thrown in).  The Barony hosts a revel the second Thursday of every month. Everyone is welcome, come in garb if you can and bring a dish or drink to share. We will be doing rapier and armored fighting as well as some combat archery, games and fun. Fighter Practice is held at CSU.

Preparations for Crown Tournament are underway.

Upcoming events:

                  11-13 August 2017 ~ Crown Tournament

Villaleon                                                                              Seneschal: Unna Farulfsdottir

We are off to a quiet start to 2017, and are looking forward to adding two more members to our roster.  We had three Shire-folk receive awards from Her Majesty, at Viking Vntr Vunderlandt.  We continue working to integrate the two population groups when it comes to A&S and fighter practices.

We are looking forward to working with Aarquelle, as they transition to Barony, and will consider the future relationship between our groups as they have settled into their new status.

Upcoming events:

White Mountain                                                     Seneschal: Mingus O’Brien

The group has been quiet, nothing to report.

Windkeep                                                                         Seneschal: Gwenhwyvar ferch Tewdrig

Words from our local Seneschals

For the month of: December 2016

Aarquelle                                                                           Seneschal: Syr eErwyn y Teigr

December was a quiet month for Aarquelle.  Weather and holidays limited our practices, and in some cases our travels.  We held out annual holiday party, with over 50 people attending.  We are now gearing up for Viking Vinter Vunderlandt

Upcoming events:

                  14 January 2017 ~ Viking Vintr Vunderlandt

February ~ As You Like It

8 April 2017 ~ Kingdom Arts & Sciences Collegium

14-16 July 2017 ~ Highlands Rapier Camp and War Collegium

Al’Barran                                                                           Seneschal: Ymanya Murray

The December Populace meeting was cancelled, in favor of the al-Thing coinciding with Midwinter War Practice.  Midwinter went well, Shyla and her team put together a smooth and enjoyable event.  Many people pitched in to make the event successful, from planning, onsite and the amazing feast crew.

Mistress Melodia has been selected as the next Seneschal of al-Barrran.  I could not be more thrilled, both to work with her over the transition and to leave the office in her hands.  I could not have a better successor.  She is already working with the city, planning Ren Fair in earnest.

The financial committee has approved extending the al-Things, to see if they are supportable long term.

SPOTLIGHT:  I cannot thank Elisee enough for jumping in and taking over Midwinter feast, when the original feast coordinator could no longer do it.  It was especially awesome given that we didn’t have the kitchen.  Her whole crew was incredible.

Upcoming events:

Blackwater Keep                                                  Seneschal: Devon

Not much has occurred during the holiday season.  We have continued to have monthly group meetings, A&S meetings and fighter practices.  We are planning on having a full day get-together, in late February or early March, to do some workshops and have fun.

Upcoming events:

Blaiddwyn                                                                        Seneschal: Mordygan MacGregor

Blaiddwyn is on winter hiatus.

Upcoming events:

Bryngalou                                                                                          Seneschal: Einarr Skallagrimmsson

Everything is positive!  We have motivated and involved member; good participation and input!

We had a relatively quiet month, with the holidays, but did find tme to get together to paint Shire banners.  Thank you to all who dedicated their time on the project.  We are looking at a way to hold more A&S classes, such as on a weekly or biweekly basis.  Shire members have volunteered already to teach several classes and set up sewing times to teach garb making.

St. Brigid’s Day feast is upcoming, and the whole Shire has dedicated much of their time and effort to get this event ready.

Upcoming events:

                  21 January 2017 ~ St. Brigid’s Day Celebration

Caer Galen                                                                       Seneschal: Keridwen Andersdottir

Midwinter 2016 was fantastic!

A 2017 planning session, and monthly meeting was held at Dwen’s house (complete with tacos and margaritas!) Keridwen will be running Caer Galen Defender, and Enduro will be run by Rowenna and Nico.  A Battlemoor land coorindator volunteered, Lady, Annabel, as well as acting as intermediary between the Battlemoor autocrat team and Caer Galen.  THL Shoshanna will be autocrat for Toys for Tots, in the fall.  We did some brainstorming on Midwinter 2017, considering a Mongolian theme.

Upcoming events:

                  7-9 July 2017 ~ Caer Galen Defender

                  28-30 July ~ Enduro

Caerthe                                                                                 Seneschal:

Upcoming events:

                  7 January 2017 ~ Twelfth Night

Citadel of the Southern Pass           Seneschal: Marco D’Este

The group is in a really healthy spot and continues to grow in overall attendance.  Our local brewery group continues to experiment with different types of drinks, we held an impressive candle making class that went very well and our Calyx Harmoniae impresses every time the Barony gets to hear their amazing voices.  We have openings for the officer positions of Rook Herald and Chronicler, the A&S officer change-over went really well.

The Citadel has been working hard to prepare for 12th Night; everything should be in order and ready to go.  Feast, Court and War Practice are well planned and good to go.

SPOTLIGHT: Brandon Sivret has been working for over four months on arming the local populace with gear for Estrella War.  Out of his own kindness, he has helped to produce three full kits and continues to produce even more.  He has also produced several crossbows, so we should see more bolts in the air this year.  He has been taking time out of his life to teach people that it is not impossible to get out on the field.

Upcoming events:

21-22 January 2017 ~ Twelfth Night and War Practice

Draca Mor                                                                                 Seneschal: Saeunn

Our Yule Celebration was held in December.  A site has been found for The Mor You Know, and A&S event, tentatively planned for 22-23 April.  Plans are being made for a demonstration at a local Renaissance Faire in May.  A site for STAG is being investigated, and is planned to occur in late summer.  We are continuing to plan for two Kingdom level events, to occur in 2017.  Local A&S classes are being scheduled for the new year.

Upcoming events:

22-23 April ~ The Mor You Know

Dragonsspine                                                            Seneschal: Mary of Lyonshall

The Barony is doing well.  We are looking forward to the upcoming events (Candlemas, Carnival and Coronation) and a good 2017.  We have selected an autocrat team for Carnival of Venice and the event is moving forward.

Fighter practice is well attended, with a few new fighters.  Mistress Lydia is working on new classes and projects for A&S.  Letters are being accepted for the Chronicler office.

Upcoming events:

                  28 January 2017 ~ Candlemas

1 April ~ Carnival of Venice

                  6 May 2017 ~ Coronation

Drygestan                                                                                           Seneschal: Christine Woyade

It has been a quiet holiday season, kicked off by a very productive populace meeting.  We decided on 2017 events, and solicited bids.  We plan to support Bryngolau’s St. Brigid’s Day Feast, instead of hosting a separate Yule.  We are planning to host several events this year, including Ren Faire, ComiCon and Drystone with the Company of St Martin.

Upcoming events:

Fontaine dans Sable                                       Seneschal: Adriana Lopes de Rodas

December was an uneventful month for Fontaine, after a successful demo at the Farmington Public Library on 5 December.  Wednesday Medieval Muster continues to be well attended with Rapier and A&S participants.  We hope to see more heavy fighters in the upcoming weeks, before War.

The barony has a new Baronial Scribe, THL Anna Katherine and Mistress Elizabeth has agreed to become Deputy Seneschal.  Letters of intent to poll as the next Coronet of Fontaine are being accepted until 31 January.

Upcoming events:

14 January 2017 ~ Twelfth Night and War practice

11 March 2017 ~ Crown Tournament

22 April 2017 ~ Sworded Affaire

Gleann Medonach                                              Seneschal:

Upcoming events:

Hawk’s Hollow                                                         Seneschal: Grellan O'Conchobhair

We have slowed during these winter months, with archery ongoing, and preparations for Caerthan 12th Night.  The new A&S officer is leading brainstorming discussions on an “A&S sweatshop” to create largesse for the Crown.  We are also looking at running an event, other than St. Sebastian’s, and have begun idea formation.

Upcoming events:

Hinterland                                                                       Seneschal:

Upcoming events:

Nahrun Kabirun                                                    Seneschal: Heinric Von Drachenburg

The Shire is in a great place right now, with the addition of 7 new people in December.  Students will be back from winter break in about two weeks.  We are holding regular, weekly, events attended by 35-40 people.  Fighter practice alone included visitors from other groups, and several first time fighters.  The weekly armor workshop night is still going strong; despite the cooling of the weather (I bet you CO people think that is funny!)

We have revived the City of Rocks event and planning is currently underway.  We have also selected a date for the masked ball, tentatively 20 May.

The office of Seneschal is open to letters of intent, as I step down.  I am very confident in the officers, and my deputy, that the Shire is well suited to the transition.

SPOTLIGHT:  Big round of huzzahs to my deputy Seneschal Seamus, who gives sage advice and listens well, when people wish to scream.

Upcoming events:

31 March 2017 ~ Siege of the City (City of Rocks state park)

20 May ~ Masked Ball

                  11-12 November 2017 ~ Coronation

We are working on scheduling A&S meetings, as well as fighter practices, to include as many Shire members as possible.  We will be working to get a scroll completed for Juan’s memorial service.  We will be deciding on what our next event will be next year, and will be helping with Viking Vintr Vunterlandt.

Good Peers of the Outlands heed the words of your King and Queen!

After much consideration, We have decided that We will not be holding peerage circles at Battlemoor as We will be holding them 10 days prior at Crown Tournament. We look forward to your counsel at the other scheduled circles throughout the summer.

In service to the Dream,
King Kolgrimr and Queen Danielle

Hail to land where dragons dwell! Good tidings from King Kolgrimr and Queen Danielle.

This weekend past We had the pleasure of visiting the beautiful barony of Dragonsspine. We enjoyed Ourselves very much and would like to thank Our populace for their joviality and kindness. We would also like to thank Baroness Mary for the use of her incredible land. The site was far more than beautiful and it certainly made this already incredible event much more so.

His Majesty enjoyed Himself greatly in the heavy tournament held on Saturday morning. The fighting was chivalrous and most entertaining for all who participated and watched. The rapier tournament was held afterwards and Her Majesty felt great joy at the acts of chivalry and prowess that She did see upon the field. After that, an archery tournament commenced and there was much skill to be beheld upon the range. Congratulations to all the new champions of Dragonsspine!

We also held baronial polling to determine the next Baron and Baroness of the barony. We thank all of the good gentles who did come and speak their words of counsel to Us on this matter. We determined that Don Gianni Sangermano and The Honorable Lady Jeanette deVallier will ascend to this honored position. Congratulations are due to them both!

We made such wonderful memories this weekend past and We very much look forward to seeing all the good gentles in this wonderful barony again!

In service to the Dream,
King Kolgrimr and Queen Danielle

Greetings unto the most kind and generous populace of the Outlands,

It is with a heavy heart that We received words of tragedy that befell a young member of An Tir. Her name is Naomi of Wealdsmere and she is 9 years of age.  At a recent event, this young lady became injured when her dress caught on fire and she is currently being treated at the Shriners Children's Hospital in Sacramento.

Her Majesty and I were approached by a good gentle of An Tir and were asked to send her a letter to keep her in good spirits. Knowing the astounding generosity of the Mighty Outlands, We believe that We can do much better than one letter. We would ask all who are able, to please write some kind words to this young lady so that we may lift her spirits during this time. Please send your letters to Our Disaster Relief Coordinator, Baroness Isabel Benet, so that she may collect them and we can send a care package to this young lady. Baroness Isabel’s address is 14704 E 26th Way. Aurora CO 80011.

Thank you all for your generosity.
King Kolgrimr and Queen Danielle

Greetings to the land of the scorpion from King Kolgrimr and Queen Danielle!

We thank you for your gracious hospitality at this past Grand Outlandish. It had been many years since His Majesty had attended this magnificent event and He greatly enjoyed his return. Her Majesty had never before had the pleasure of attending and was impressed by the hospitality of the people of al-Barran.

The tournaments that were held were a fearsome display of prowess and honor, both upon the heavy field and also the rapier field. The Knight’s Bannerette Tournament was thrilling and We will always remember the gentle who took the field and sang beautifully for all to hear. The Templar Twilight Tournament was most entertaining and Her Majesty was struck by the kindness and chivalry of the warriors who took the field. We also very much enjoyed the spectacular Hafla that night. The dancing was mesmerizing and the drumming was inspiring.

We wish to thank Jarl Gunwaldt and all those who assisted with the Baronial Polling. We also wish to thank all of the gentles of al-Barran who took the time to speak with Us about the future of the Barony. We announced at Grand Outlandish that the next Baron and Baroness of al-Barran will be The Honorable Lord Marc Antoine de la Rue and Baroness Bianca de Vittoria. Congratulations are due to them both.

We also wish to thank Their Excellencies of al-Barran for their incredible generosity and hospitality. They attended to Our every need and were amazing hosts. Her Majesty particularly enjoyed herself at the Baroness’s Tea that Her Excellency hosted.

We will cherish the memories that were made at Grand Outlandish and We greatly look forward to our next visit to al-Barran.

In service to the Dream,
King Kolgrimr and Queen Danielle

A cool mist rises from the ground in the pre-dawn hours. As the eastern sky begins to lighten in the promise of a coming sun, the silhouette of the castle brightens. Today, the siege begins. The commander of the attacking forces surveys the surrounding lands; assesses the strengths of the allied forces to either flank. Their banners hanging motionless in the solemn stillness that is dawn; a tranquility soon to be shattered by the terrible sounds of destruction and death. He turns and watches as his trebuchet crews complete their inspections of his giant war machines. In the near distance, the cavalry and archers begin to form. Pausing only long enough to greet the rising sun, he turns on his heel to issue his orders. Today, glory will be had; history will be made …
And so begins THE SIEGE AT INLANDISH. The four northern baronies are gathering in the field of war for this four-day event to be held over the Memorial Day weekend. They have brought their allies; shires and mercenary companies throughout the Kingdom have joined sides to prove their dominance. The prize is the castle; the reward is the legacy of the tale.

But there is so much more to conducting war than what happens on the battlefield.
At The Siege at Inlandish; the support around the soldiers is what will win the day! Come not only to support your troops, but also to support your artisans. There will be A&S competitions and contests of heraldry, cooking, bardic, horsemanship, archery, period display, thrown weapons, children’s activities and even dancing, gaming, and reveling throughout the long weekend. Be a part of the Combat Siege Cooking Contest; or for the youth (and adults) test your prowess and skills in the Survive the Siege contest!

There will be more than you can do in four days. And everything … contributes to the ultimate victory of the siege.
The pre-dawn light of the sun slices the Eastern horizon with its garish sanguine color. Acknowledging the symbolism of the bloody sunrise to come, the commander of the castle garrison stands silently, watching from the high wall of the castle at the gathering forces below. Grimly, he knows that the attackers have numbers on their side, but he also knows the strength of his castle’s walls. These are walls that have stood for many years, against many a would be conqueror. He knows that today will be no different. As the sky continues to lighten, he runs through his order of command one more time; assessing his every defense available. Pausing to watch as the sun breaks the horizon in glorious light, he understands that the order of the day is a simple one … hold the castle!
This is one siege that you do not want to miss!

The SCA, Kingdom of the Outlands recognizes that there are conditions that require the management of excessive noise/sound levels at events. Carbide noisemakers, which are made to resemble period black powder cannons, are a common source of noise at events. Although the use of these devices have no apparent or immediate impact on the health and well-being of the general populace, it has been deemed necessary to enact procedures and guidelines for the use of these devices in order to provide comfort and peace of mind for those attending SCA events.. These procedures are to include setting established times the devices may be used, advanced notification of their use, and any other specific procedures deemed necessary by the autocrat or local group hosting the SCA event.

Minimum rules on carbide noisemaker use at all official SCA events in the Outlands are as follows:

❖ Operation of devices may only occur between 10:00 am and 10:00 pm.

❖ Carbide noisemakers may not be used during court except with specific dispensations from the Crown or Baronial Coronet hosting the Court.

❖ Only one device may be fired at a time, with at least 1 minute between each concurrent device being fired.

❖ No more than 4 total activations in any hour per camp.

❖ Carbide noisemakers may not be fired closer than 50 feet from any other adjacent camp without express permission from the owners of that camp.

❖ Whenever possible, point carbide noisemakers away from other camp areas, toward the outskirts of the site.

❖ Carbide noisemakers may not be fired next to a road or path that is used.

❖ Verbal warning must be issued before carbide noisemakers are fired, e.g., “fire in the hole”

These rules are meant as a minimum set of standards. Stricter rules, up to and including a total restriction of the use of carbide noisemakers, may be set and enforced based on specific site needs or the preferences of event staff. Any person or camp who refuses to comply with policies may be asked to leave at event staff’s request. These rules apply only to carbide noisemakers; black powder cannons are strictly forbidden at any event.

Thank You, My Outlands

Beloved People of The Outlands,

As Our reign draws to a close, I often pause to reflect on Our journey. This experience has been one of the most brilliantly transformative of Our lives and has made Us both stronger, more confident people in all of the roles We play. The generosity and devotion of the good peoples of the Outlands have given Us an eight-month fairytale dream come true. I wish to thank you all for giving Us this reign.

I personally have grown so tremendously over these past eight months that I hardly recognize myself. In this space of time, I have gone from a wide-eyed newcomer who received her Award of Arms the day she became Crown Princess, to a Queen who stands up confidently among any crowd. Thanks to the good gentles of the Outlands who have believed in Me, I have become the woman I never dared to believe I could be.

This time on the Stag Throne has taught me that my heart is big enough to love and embrace the Kingdom as her people’s mother. I have learned that if I merely relax into the warm love of our people, my welfare and heart will want for nothing. Our people are kind, generous, and protective of those we hold dear, and I have been the fortunate recipient of that devotion.

By allowing me to love you, and loving me in return, you have helped me develop the best parts of myself. We all do that for each other in this society. In accepting and loving each other, we all are mutually encouraged to become the best versions of ourselves. It is my firm belief that by creating community and devoting ourselves to caring for friends and family within that community, we are accomplishing one of the most important things we can do in our lives.

As Queen, I have seen the large and varied community of the Outlands from a bird’s eye view. I am able to trace the latticework of relationships that overlay hundreds of mundane miles and bridge wide cultural divides. It is a joy to witness our diverse peoples come together for the common purposes of a shared dream.

In this society we are all working to develop ourselves in new positive directions. We strive to become more selfless and generous in our service; more patient and diligent in our artistic endeavors; and more brave, gracious, and equitable in every confrontation. We help and guide each other along this path, and we offer each other kind encouragement when we see a friend falter. As a community we evolve together, continually striving to better ourselves and all develop our “peer-like qualities.”

I have learned the true value of friendship, in having to rely so completely on so many people to coordinate, facilitate, and serve our every activity. I wish to first thank all of the members of Our household who went above and beyond their required duties to serve His Majesty, Me, and The Dream with their countless hours of service. Somewhere in the midst of these thousands of hours we have spent together, we have knitted ourselves together into a family who laugh and cry together and hold each other up in times of strain. You are all my family for life and I love you with my whole heart.

To all of those who organized and staffed the events of the Outlands the past six months, I thank you. We have been incredibly fortunate to attend and host the events that our Baronies and Shires have coordinated so conscientiously. We have enjoyed ourselves immensely and are proud to share our kingdom’s hospitality with visitors and friends.

I wish to thank the artisans of the Outlands, who donated so much of themselves through their time and talent. We have received many bountiful baskets of largess donated through Our Baronies and Shires – many full of anonymous gifts. We have also received special gifts for foreign royalty and beautiful donations for honored gentles. The library of scrolls alone that our Kingdom’s scribes have produced for this reign would put any medieval monk to shame.

His Majesty, Our children, and I have also received amazing personal gifts as well, thoughtful works of art and craftsmanship that bring tears to my eyes. For all of you who donated to Kingdom largess this reign, I extend my most heartfelt thanks. You have made me a generous Queen who showers Our people and those from foreign lands with the handmade treasures of Our artisans. Thank you so much for making so many delighted recipients happy with your handmade gifts.

I wish to thank all of the fighters who fight strong on the fields of tourney and battle, for the glory of the Outlands. When you salute me, I am humbled by your sincerity, and honored by the chivalry with which you face your opponents. All of you fine men and women make Us proud when you fiercely represent Our stag in battle and defend Our beloved Kingdom with all of your hearts. Thank you for your devotion.

I would like to specifically thank all of the tailors, cobblers, and jewelers who have donated countless hours, cramped fingers, and stiff backs to the cause of making the Crown of the Outlands strikingly well-attired. In this society, we transport mundane spaces into far-away lands with our garb. Without these talented and generous gentles, I would be an average adult woman in jeans. These artisans are to thank for creating the beautiful aesthetic of Our reign and making Our Dream shine.

I would also like to thank all of the children and those young at heart in our Kingdom, who have kept My dream alive in their sparkling eyes. To see awe and wonderment in the eyes of a child is perhaps the best gift a queen can receive. I have been shamelessly greedy with hugs from your children this reign and don’t plan to stop. I only hope that Countess Kathryn gets to continue these relationships with your children and be the recipient of this joyful energy. Our children have likewise been accepted by the Outlands’ good gentles and have enjoyed this reign tremendously. Thank you to all of the children who make this game magical for the rest of us.

And lastly I would personally like to thank my King for giving me this opportunity to experience this fairy-tale journey with him. I have learned how Our strengths are different and absolutely complementary and that together We are two halves of a whole. To grow alongside my strong and handsome husband in this endeavor has been an experience I will treasure for the rest of my life.

Your Devoted Queen,

Kathryn

If I had to choose a single value upon which the backbone of our society is built, I would most certainly say that value is chivalry. And though this ideal is often difficult to describe, it is a quality that we can all identify when we see it. For me, chivalry is an inner sense of honor directing us to identify the right and honorable action to take, and the strength of will to take that action when it is difficult to do so.

Often we identify chivalrous acts in those who give up an advantage to an opponent, those who endure personal discomfort or hardship for the protection and care of ladies or people in need of help, or those who take-on arduous tasks for Crown and Kingdom. At the root of these acts is that intangible personal quality of chivalry that engenders a strong and true sense of trust in those who hold themselves to this high standard.

Although I have witnessed chivalrous acts by many of our good gentles, and I look to all of the peerages for examples of chivalry, as Queen of The Outlands, one of the most powerful experiences I have had is to sit among The King’s Knights in the Chivalry Circle. Surrounded by men and women who have been elevated as Knights for their excellent martial prowess, exemplary chivalric behavior, and intense fealty to The Crown, I feel safer and more treasured than I could have ever imagined possible. And this experience extends beyond the circle to any time I need help from a Knight of The Outlands. I trust that the right thing will be done because uncompromising chivalry is the standard they hold themselves and each other to, and because any unchivalrous behavior in their ranks will be quickly checked and corrected. When I am dealing with a Knight of The Outlands, I know that I will be treated with honor and respect.

It also gives me solace knowing that the leadership of our Kingdom is decided by right of arms, among those who either belong to The Order of The Chivalry, or aspire to do so. If The Outlands is headed by a King who truly holds himself to chivalrous standards, I feel safe, honored, and respected as I serve the Crown and walk the lands of this fine Kingdom. If our King is guided by his chivalrous ideals to do the right thing when it is difficult or unpopular, I know that our Kingdom is in good hands.

And yet it is not only Knights and Kings who can be chivalrous. It is my belief that we each possess a moral compass that directs us toward right and away from wrong. What is more difficult, though, is the strength of constitution we need to take the often difficult or humbling steps and do what we know is right. The chivalrous deed might be to volunteer for a difficult Baronial job knowing that nobody else has the emotional resources to do it. It could also mean compromising with an adversary in order to maintain peace. Chivalry is seen in the servers who eat last at feast and in the autocrats who equip privies with night lights.

I am proud to say that chivalry lives strong among ALL the people of The Outlands. If a tent needs set-up in the rain, there are always Outlanders willing to risk a cold and help until the job is done. A lost child is immediately helped by a dozen adults; diverse factions regularly come together for Kingdom projects; and personal egos are set aside for the good of the larger cause. Our children, our aged, and those in-between are safe and respected within our Kingdom as long as we hold ourselves and each other to this high standard.

I encourage all of Our good people to take-up the challenge of The Chivalry. Like the Knights of The Outlands, we can all look inside ourselves for honor and strength, and draw upon this to step forward and do what is right and good. Our Kingdom will be strengthened by your virtue.

Your Devoted Queen,

Kathryn

Serving the Outlands

I have recently been reflecting on what it means to serve our mighty Kingdom of The Outlands and the beautiful benefits we receive back from Her in return.

When I ask myself what draws us together to combine our diverse efforts and pursue our common purpose, I think of the virtues that our beloved Kingdom represents. When we swear fealty to the Crown, we give ourselves over to our ideal Kingdom of The Outlands whose values shine true, and whose leaders protect and reward Her good people for their talents. When we devote our efforts to serving the Crown, we receive in return a sense of belonging and a precise position within Her folds. She brings meaning to the hours of labor and creativity that we devote to making Her stronger, more esteemed, and more beautiful. We all want our Outlands to shine brightly and light Her lands all the way from the Citadel of the Southern Pass to the Shire of Plattefordham and all places in between.

When I first arrived in these current middle ages, I struggled to find my place. Then my handsome King made me Queen and I was gifted with one of the most esteemed and public roles in our kingdom. I now serve The Outlands as Her Queen, and as such it is my duty and pleasure to be the loving mother to Our people.

I have found that every outward gesture I offer in service to the Outlands and Our people is returned tenfold. As I have embraced the people of The Outlands, I have been rewarded with an ever-expanding web of love and acceptance. I have also developed greater personal strength in tandem with the weight of the responsibilities that have come to rest on my shoulders. And I have gained a deeper trust and pride in my beloved partner and husband who has now also become my King. The more I serve My Kingdom, the more I am able to live my dream.

I encourage each of you to embrace your own service to these mighty Outlands. What do you contribute, and what do you receive back in return for your devoted efforts? A sense of belonging? Deep and enriching friendships? Greater artistic talent? Increased leadership or organization skills? I challenge you to develop your service in ways that not only enhance the beauty and strength of our mighty Outlands and Her people, but also contribute to your own personal growth.

We shall have need of such good people as you.

Creating Ourselves in the SCA

Greetings unto the Populace of these Mighty Outlands,

As I write this I am still your Crown Princess, and am eagerly preparing for Coronation in a few days – yet by the time this is published, I will be your Queen. This is intended to be the first of five monthly diary entries that I wish to share with you throughout My reign in order to let you into My thoughts and share some of My experiences with you. I hope these publications find each of you healthy and fully enjoying these Current Middle Ages. I also hope that these diary entries cause you to pause and re-examine your own experience and understanding of the SCA.

In mundane times of yore I earned my full academic regalia via a Ph.D. in socio-cultural anthropology by studying the American belly dance phenomenon. What interests me most about the belly dance community is the way each woman is encouraged to create an ideal version of herself – a persona – and a stage name. She then costumes herself as that exotic person, performs to an audience, and is celebrated as a beautiful dancer by her fellow belly dancers. I have found that the sense of community created through this process does amazing things to the self-confidence and wellbeing of the women who belly dance. The community created by these women with and for each other is strong and allows each dancer to develop into her own ideal version of herself.

To me the SCA seems to empower us all in a similar way. As soon as each of us began playing this game, we were encouraged to imagine ourselves from any place and time before 1600 A.D.. We were helped to name ourselves and develop a personal device proclaiming ourselves to the world; and we have all spent countless hours clothing ourselves in our best approximation of the person we wish to become.

This Society is based on earned equality – where we are all given the opportunity to achieve recognition and advancement based on the skills and character traits we develop to better ourselves. We are rewarded for pursuing our own talents and interests, and for helping our neighbors do the same.

Many of us came to the SCA from the awkward margins of society. Growing up we were the bookish introverts, the nonconformists, the square pegs in amongst the “normal” kids. As adults we have yearned to escape a society in which so many of our coworkers cannot even imagine who they want to become – much less take the steps to become them. We each made our way here to find each other, and we have agreed to construct a haven in which to explore and improve ourselves amongst likeminded friends.

So with this all in perspective, I am incredibly excited as We approach Our coronation this week. I look forward to helping create an ideal day for The Outlands to experience together, and I am very excited to look out and see the people who are living in that moment with me. But most of all I look forward to My beloved husband – the King of The Outlands – putting the crown on My head and kissing Me. And that’s because in My ideal world, there is most certainly a handsome king... and lots of kissing!

I am sure you have all seen the growing wildfires in the western portion of the county. We are getting reports from the Kingdom Disaster Relief Coordinators in that area, and are keeping an eye out for issues. Currently we have reports that we do have SCA members who have lost their homes. Please stay tuned for ways we can help.

In our own beloved Kingdom, we have a couple of small wildfires, with no members affected.
Most of the Kingdom is under an EXTREME fire danger alert. Dry, hot, windy conditions are the culprit, with an abundance of undergrowth from the wet spring. We have been relatively fire free this season, but our secondary fire season has just begun.

Now might be a good time to put some mitigation practices in place, if you have not already done so. Here is a link to help you get started:

Keep an eye on the Kingdom pages, both official and unofficial for more updates as the situation develops.

Greetings from Sir Lavan Longwalker, Kingdom Seneschal.

I have noticed, since Crown Tournament, somewhat of a loss of understanding in the use of the correct title for the Crown Prince and Crown Princess. The Outlands Crown Prince and Crown Princess are titled “Your Royal Highness.” Too often I have heard “Your Highness.” This is the title for a Prince (one that serves the Crown ruling a Principality), not a Crown Prince (heir to the Throne of a Kingdom). For example: The Prince of the Mists of The West Kingdom would be “Your Highness” the Crown Prince of the Outlands should be “Your Royal Highness.” For the future, I ask all to remember this for our future Crown Prince and Crown Princess.

I am proud to announce that Baroness Somisawhel de Sousa will be taking the reins of Kingdom Seneschal at Coronation. She has served this past year as Southern Deputy Seneschal and will do a great job serving the Kingdom as a whole. I wish her well in this humbling endeavor.

I also wish to give thanks to those who have served with me as a kingdom officer and group officer. Their efforts have made the Kingdom what it is today, and their service helped set the tone for the future of this wonderful Kingdom. Thank you for your service to the Outlands!

I want to especially thank the Kingdom Seneschal Team: Duke Bela Kos, Jarl Gunwaldt Gullbjorn and Baroness Somisawhel de Sousa. Their excellent support, guidance and steadfast work made my job so much easier. I am proud to have served with these individuals as part of a team whose goal was to help make the Kingdom a better place. This teamwork made serving the Outlands a true joy!

With that, I bid you all enjoy these coming days of Fall and, as always, be safe.

Uffda!

All members of the populace are invited to attend StagCon: The Premier Service Event of the Outlands. For nearly two decades, StagsCon serves as the Kingdom of the Outlands service and training collegium, open to all who wish to learn the ways of service. In addition to sessions for officers, there will also be training and sessions on other aspects of service.

To start the day, breakfast will be served, consisting of coffee, tea, hot chocolate, hard boiled eggs, fruit, cheese, muffins, biscotti, breads and spreads. Lunch will be sandwich and wrap fixings, veggie quiche, green salad, pasta salad, hummus and veggies, fruit, desserts, remaining breakfast items, coffee, tea and lemonade.

Included in the Saturday sessions will be a Tournament Practicum to teach marshaling, heralding and listing using an actual tournament and in a safe learning environment. All fighters are invited as well as any wishing to learn and receive more practice marshaling, heralding and listing.

On Sunday, His Excellency Sir Gregor von Munchhaussen will be hosting a War Practicum during war practice to train marshals for war. Many non-fighting marshals are needed for Estrella War. Come and learn how you can support the war effort by marshaling.

Greetings Good People of The Outlands,

His Royal Majesty and I have just returned from Pennsic, and We had a wonderful time. Being able to see the breadth of the Known World—brought together to fight, to share, to shop, and to revel—was absolutely unbelievable. There are high points I would like to share with you, but underlying all of these experiences I developed a much deeper-felt pride in our beloved Outlands. I found that it is only in comparison to other Kingdoms that we are able to more clearly understand and take pride in who we are. By seeing ourselves beside these sister Kingdoms, we come to love what unites us all as well as what sets us apart from them. The Outlands raises her people to be strong-willed, incredibly generous, a bit irreverent, and fiercely brave. Our heavy fighters are small-unit spear gods who can wrap the end of any enemy line, and our rapier fighters inflict fierce casualties as they work in tight, cohesive units. We have beautifully-skilled artisans, first-rate archers, and courageous fighters. But as Outlanders I believe that we’re all of these things... and we’re cool too.

Apart from briefly attending Estrella War several years ago, I have never been to a foreign war, so to be given the opportunity to represent our Kingdom in the largest war in the Known World was incredibly exciting... and intimidating. When I arrived at Pennsic, I was given a schedule of high-importance events that I was expected to attend, and my stomach dropped. Among other things on the list were a State Dinner, The Queens Tea, a Known World Queens Happy Hour, and the famous Hoity-Toity party. I am, at the core, a very shy person who dreads small talk and unstructured activities where I don’t know what to do with myself. And on top of this, I was well aware that the people of all the other kingdoms would be forming and disseminating their opinions about our fine Outlands based on how We comported ourselves, how finely made Our garb was, and how generous Our gifts were.

And then I remembered that I am The Queen of The Outlands. The green and gold blood in My veins makes me fiercely brave, and no form of social anxiety will take me down.

Each time HRM and I went out to one of these official events, members of our camp (about 30 Outlanders in all) would come by our tent to talk while We were getting ready to see Us off. On one occasion, I was trepidatiously preparing to go to the extremely regal Queen of The East’s Tea. As I donned the hand-stamped silk Persian outfit in Kingdom colors made for me by Our Baroness of al-Barran, Sabiha, and headed out of camp for the Queen’s Tea, I completely felt the part of The Outlands’s desert Queen. As my guards and the Baroness of Fontaine Alamanda gathered to escort Me to the tea, I felt their love and strength surround me. On and off the battlefield, Outlanders present an impenetrable front that strengthens whoever is leading the charge. I knew that I could be as strong as I needed to be, if I was representing Our people to the world. I rolled my shoulders back and walked boldly into the tea.

As it turned out, Queen Etheldreda Ivelchyld of The East put on the most decadent tea parties one could imagine – with delicious foods, gifts for us all, and gambling on races. The other Queens were delightful and we all enjoyed getting to know each other. All of them were beautiful in their own ways, wearing the finest garments from their kingdoms’ artisans, and I could see the pride in their own cultures in the smiles on their faces. I personally took pride in the fact that my Persian dress – alone in a room of European fashions – was beautiful proof that we are in many ways distinct from the rest of The Known World.

We have well earned the reputation of being a rebel culture that is not afraid to strike-out on its own, so in this setting I sought-out conversations with each of the Queens and was proud to give them each an emerald donated by Countess Claudia. My ease in the situation grew to the point when, after placing a bet on our Kingdom colors, I turned around to my dear cousin Queen Elizabeth of Atenveldt and yelled a very inappropriate, “OUTLAAAAANDS!!!” At this, Her Majesty laughed, rolled her eyes, and said, “We can’t take you Outlanders anywhere.”

This month we get the opportunity to host 19 visiting Royals, and hundreds of travelers from other kingdoms at Battlemoor. As we welcome them into our land, we all become ambassadors of The Outlands. I encourage all of you to share the best of what we have with our guests. Be generous with hospitality and chivalrous on the battlefield as you portray the best Outlands traits that shine through you. And yes, being cool is a Kingdom-wide condition.

Your Devoted Queen,
Kathryn

Closure of the Office of the Chirurgeonate – August 10, 2015

Originally published here: http://socsen.sca.org/closure-of-the-office-of-the-chirurgeonate-august-10-2015/

 |

The decision has been made to close the Office of the Chirurgeonate as of August 10th, 2015. The board and corporate officers want to extend their gratitude for ALL who have served our organization in this capacity in the past. To those who have provided feedback, questions, and worked to explore options for scopes of the office that would allow our organization to retain the office and maintain insurance coverage for the officers and our organization, many thanks as well.

To clarify some of the concerns that have been raised during the many discussions of this change, the board and corporate officers want to provide the following information:

The Society Seneschal has been directed to remove references to the Chirurgeonate from the Record Retention Policy. Existing records should be retained for 2 years for adults, 21 years for minors, then shredded to ensure any Personally Identifying Information is destroyed.

Local groups should sort records into Adult, Minor and Destroy categories and ship (paid for by the local group) records to the corporate office. The corporate office will retain records and handle the shredding.

Each Kingdom has thirty business days to transport these records to the corporate office.

Event Coordinators/Stewards/Autocrats are still responsible for arranging for EMS on site if that is required by municipal/county/state requirements. This most often will apply to large events projecting an attendance greater than the threshold set by the applicable modern agency. It is recommended to include information regarding distance from site to medical care in event announcements, particularly for camping events.

The marshallate will still be responsible for reporting injuries on the field. Seneschals will still be responsible for reporting injuries (particularly requiring transport) as currently directed.

Tangible assets owned by SCA branches that are specific to the Office of the Chirurgeon may be retained or donated or sold, in accordance with applicable financial policies.

Over the counter medications may not be purchased by SCA branches to distribute or make available to event attendees.

The badge of the fleam will remain available for those individual volunteers (not affiliated with the SCA, Inc. and its Kingdoms and local groups) willing to provide basic first aid.

Should additional questions or concerns regarding this change arise, please direct them to the SCA President, at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

Our thanks again, to all the volunteers that have helped keep our organization going for 50 years!

Leslie Vaughn
