Frequently Asked Questions
What is the SCA?
The SCA is group of people who have come together to re-create the Middle Ages and early Renaissance. From the SCA's humble beginnings at a Berkely California backyard party in 1966 the SCA has grown to have formal groups on every continent but South America and Antartica.
What is the difference between re-creation and reenactment?
Re-creation is actually recreating all the aspects of a time. Reenactors go a step further and stay completely in the time period. Their battles are carefully choreographed and their campsite perfectly planned out. In re-creation, members do their own research and try to recreate those parts that interest them. In combat, our members focus on actual fighting, not trying to rememember at what point they are supposed to die.
What do people do in the SCA?
It is probably more appropriate to say, 'what don't they do'? If it was a part of that period of time we can probably find someone who is working on it. Here is a SHORT list of some of the things SCA members do: Caligraphy, armored combat, target archery, combat archery, dyeing, spinning, weaving, singing, playing musical instruments, making rope, making candles, cook, leatherwork, woodwork, stone carving, making chainmail, sewing, e.t.c, e.tc. e.t.c.
How do I get started?
First, find out what group you belong to. Contact their Hospitaller or the Senschal. They will help you find out when local events are, what you need to attend and if they have any special events just for newcomers.
What is an event?
On a regular basis we gather together. An event could be anywhere in the kingdom and could be for any reason. Sometimes the event is based around a combat tournament. Sometimes it might be around a college-like event with classes and workshops. To find out what is happening kingdom-wide, visit the Kingdom's Calendar.
What do I need to attend an event?
First of all you need to wear an attempt at pre-17th century clothing. It need not be perfect and if you don't have any made yet, your local Hospitaller has loaner clothing for you.
Secondly, find an event! Local members can suggest which events are good for newcomers. If the event has a feast (dinner) then you will want to bring feast gear (plate, cup and utensils). A good wooden bowl or plate is great first choice and can usually be found at most thift shops.
Other activities will change from event to event so talk to your local Hospitaller about what to expect.
What about memberships?
Memberships are very handy and provide you with some great benefits, but you are not required to have one to attend events or practices. You will need one if you wish to hold office, partipate in combat activities at events or receive any awards.
